ETA: Linkfor mittens (flickr)…or I also added them in the whatcha knitting forum…
Glad you’ve got it, LoriSax! :cheering: I’m most of the way through my gusset, but I haven’t been able to work on it much today. Hopefully tomorrow I’ll get more done.
Dotty: Thank you for the alternate instructions for picking up stiches. I’ve bookmarked them and will try them on the second sock. I don’t think it will matter if my first pair aren’t exactly alike as this one looks a bit wobbly anyway.
Dotty, I LOVE IT when you log in! Keep in touch and let us share the load as much as we can from here!
SNOW!!! We had it once on Christmas Eve. LOVELY. It’s supposed to get down to 29 here tomorrow night. For here, that’s BRRRRRRRRR! Gotta cover my tomatoes and harvest the lettuce and radishes before them.
:balloons:HAPPY NEW YEAR EVERYONE!!!:balloons:
Lori, glad to know you’ve figured it out! :woohoo: Picking up stitches is my least favourite part of knitting a sock. Blech.
I’ve some yarn left over from my Jaywalker and am wondering if it’s enough for a pair of footies (I have small feet, US 5) so I’m thinking learning to knit toe up will be good for my next sock project.
Hello everyone…I’ve just registered to this site, although I’ve been looking at the tutorials and the patterns for about a year now; I’m a new knitter.
Anyway, I just finished my 3rd scarf, and I was wanting to knit a sock. Most of the sock patterns I find require size 5 or smaller needles. all I have are size 6, 7, 8, 13, and 11size straight needles, and a size 10 circular needle. Also, I only have one ball of yarn (it’s pink and about 500 or so yards). All I want to do is knit a pair of ankle socks in one color, but most of the instructions require really small needles and/or 4 or 3 double sided needles. Do I really need to get all of this if I want to make simple ankle socks? Also, can you replace double needles with a circular needle?
Please help…and thanks in advance for any advice/comments!
Oh, and Happy New Year!
Jayeda: Check out thissite-several of the girls on here are using it. I’d use a size 7 needle-or the smallest u have if you have worsted weight yarn. Also-yes you can use one circfor knitting socks-needs to be at least 24" though 32" works better its called the magic loop method. There are also patternsout there for socks knit on straight needles-not double pointed ones.
Hi Jayeda,
Welcome to KH and this KAL! What Julie said is right. You do NOT need to use DPN’s to knit socks. In fact, I can’t stand knitting with DPN’s and so ONLY use magic loop. Knit Picks needles are inexpensive but really great for ML because the cord is so flexible. Follow the links that Julie included in her message.
You DO need to use the right size needle to create the fabric for the sock that will feel good. If you use a fingering weight yarn on a size 5 needle, it will be too loose and uncomfortable. Knit a swatch and see what you think! Oh, and knit the swatch using ML so it’s the same gauge as what your sock will be.
Jackie~ Did you get the mittens finished? :happydance:
Jayeda~ Julie has gave you some great patterns and pointers… dpns are not really hard they look hard… once you get past the first two rounds it gets easier…also you can learn to make socks on two circs or magic loop :happydance: …Hereis a great sock pattern two you make them on larger needles holding two worsted weight yarns together…
Not sure what we will get into today… I need to run out to the grocery store… and then work on mom’s snowflake socks… I hope you guys have a great day of knitting!! :happydance:
Hey Gang,
gosh I missed you guys!!!
I am sick of snow…back in GA where it is normally in the 70’s this time of year.
well, had some bad luck, my laptop died on my trip, and my PC died while I was gone, still need to find out if they are fixable, but for now I had to buy a new laptop with my Christmas money and then get back online…ugh.
Didn’t get to work much on my socks but I frogged the first one so I could do 2 on 1 ML, and I figured out how to do it so now I am excited…hehe
DOTTY: so glad Mike is home and please know that we don’t expect you to be all sunshiny ALL the time (although we like it when you are :happydance: ) Tell Mike, he is amazing and this year will be better for him!!
DUSTINA: Have you heard anything else on Hubby? It seems to me that it may be panic attacks or something similar. I ended up in the hospital with my heartrate through the roof and also my blood pressure, of course I was better after medication. I hope it all turns out for the good!
JULIE: Can I have that baby? Ok, I’ll settle for the older kids:thumbsup:
Ok, one more thing, before you have to buy this post at a publishing house:
I signed up on www.goddessknits.com for a KAL Mystery Sock starting Jan 5th. It costs $5 but her designs are soooo pretty and it’ll be fun! Anyone wanna join me???
Ok, hugs all around…and Welcome all Newcomers!!! And Happy New Year everyone!!!
Do it right now, KnitPit! Get the second one going - you’re almost guaranteed a pair!
I finally finished my Harris Tweed socks!:cheering: They weren’t done in time for Christmas, but mom got them New Year’s Eve - and that is barely late in my world. I was so pleased with myself - NO HOLES!!! But I missed knitting with wool - she feared hot feet, so I used KP Risata. It was nice and soft, but split like crazy. Amazingly enough, I cast on another pair right away - I’ve been dying to use some self patterning I bought. I’m just coasting down the leg …
Tina - You don’t need a blog to do the sockalong, do you? Just join the yahoo group, right? I’d do it - I just hope it’s not toe up … I haven’t done that yet, and frankly, it scares me;)
Glad to hear things are going well for you and Mike, Dotty, and GJ, my heart breaks for your options!! Hope you get some good news about dh, dustina.
It’s snowing big ol’ flakes here :teehee: …very pretty but will be more pretty when I know dh is at work safe and warm… he took my car today cause it was still parked in front of the garage where his was…he didn’t swap them around for some reason which means mine was covered in snow where his was free from snow  …
dotty~ Thank you for helping me with contacts on flickr… I couldn’t figure that out at all :teehee: …I’m glad you two are doing so well… I need to start some exercise myself lol…
Christina~ I hope you feel better soon!! Thank you… still no news… which everyone keeps saying is good news…I just wanna know either way and not that the tests are lost or something…left a message for the dr this morning :wall: …hrmm I might join ya in that one… I need to make up my mind fast :teehee:
Knitpit~ :woot: Can’t wait to see your socks!! :woot:
threesmom~ :happydance: did you take a photo before you gave them to her? I haven’t tried the rista yarn but wondered how well it would do…
Jackie~ :blooby: They look great!! I love your preemie hats…starting this month my LYS will be having a charity knit night… Not sure yet what charity I’ll pick… I think they have 4/5 you can chose from…they will send the pkgs for us…dh thinks I need to do this to get out of the house for a bit and be with others :teehee:
Julie~ how are the babies today…they are to cute…
I’m almost to the heel of mom’s snowflake sock…also she let me bring home her dvd of two socks on two circs…maybe I’ll get the hang of it that way… she says I gotta learn so I can show her :teehee: …
I hope you all have a great day of knitting!! :blooby:
Christina: I’d give you my ds-but then I wouldn’t have my helper, my Bailey is at one of my fav. ages and speaking new words every day! Caitlin is almost 2 months old and according to Grandma’s scale she weighed 10lbs last night! she’s such a chunk. Doing tummy time now and not happy about it-I ordered kp andean yesterday and hope to make myself some fetching-anyone done that pattern yet? Does it keep your hands warm enough that my fingers wont freeze? Or should I plan on continuing up to make them mittens? Never knit mittens before (besides a tiny ornament) and want them b/c they’re warmer for me than gloves, but can’t do much with them on-so I thought fetching would be better, if not convertible-what’s y’alls opinion?
Morning all, and HAPPY NEW YEAR:balloons: , a day late !
I don’t have any socks on the needles, but I started a nightie from an Interweave Knits pattern (pdf) . I just wanted to try something with the yarn that a friend got me for my birthday. It’s Cascade Pima Tencel…I don’t know if the nightie thing will work out, yardage-wise. I may turn it into a tank top. But it’s good mindless knitting for the evenings. I’m dying to do some simple stockinette socks, but can’t wrap my head around the heel part right now. I feel like I’ve forgotten all I ever knew about sock-knitting…isn’t that weird?:??
Hubby’s finishing his breakfast, so I’m going to take a quick look around the ‘net’. Love you all !
