Any Sock KAL 2

Neat! My cousin’s husband teaches at Marshall and they used to be right in Huntington but now are a bit out…going home we go through Marietta, Parkersburg and then hit Charleston…then head up to Ansted…where Roo will get sick going up Gauley Mt. every time :teehee:

Hi everyone.

Just doing a quick catch up. Not much knitting talk and no mention of a sock.

Carey: Sending positive thoughts to your friend and her babies. How are they doing? Glad you had a good knit night.

Gina: Have a great trip and try not to think about moving while you are away.

Julie: Great family pics. Good luck with school.

Rache: Glad you found a job. You will probably see some interesting sights in the hotel rooms.

Ann: Hope the house hunting goes well. How exciting for you. Are you looking in the same area?

Dustina: Has Roo settled into school yet? I have read the Sweetgum novels and really enjoyed them. I recently read the latest Blossom Street book by Debbie Macomber. Very predictable but such an easy read.

We have all 3 grandsons staying over for a couple of nights this week. Hope the weather is warm enough for them to have a swim. We may go to see a movie one day, but it isn’t so easy to find something that appeals to them all as they are so different in age.

I can still remember some of the “hills” around Elkins and not having a good feeling going up and down them going to see Dad’s family. Not a fun thing to do in the snow.

Aw, Cooper’s Hawks are little! The one you have to watch out for is the turkey vulture, and SHE is used to being handled by people. Still, she did her best to take off my middle finger the other day. Since then she’s only chewed on the edges of the glove, though.
I really am loving it here. There are so many things to do. Friday I got to handle the VIC birds, who I’d heard about (Turk, the famously bitey turkey vulture, is a VIC bird) but not handled. I’m a big fan of a tawny eagle named Max (short for Maxamillian) and a the nervous, jumpy long-crested eagle, Chrys. Max is very vocal and curious… and he just has a happy sort of face.
I’ve also gotten more flying in, including playing with a lovely trumpeter hornbill who lives at the ETC building. His name is Astar. He’s very smart, and I love him for being ridiculously exotic and cute (he kind of looks like Archeopterax, IMO), but he is a bit of a problem because he isn’t used for anything at the moment so he doesn’t get enough attention. The other hornbill (an African Ground Hornbill), Niles, is also smart and friendly. He likes to share: he sometimes gives his human friends bits of rat meat or fruit, but he is sure to find a suitable gift even if he has finished his dinner.
I managed to get myself nearly lost today in search of a Wells Fargo Bank, which I never did find. I eventually realized that I didn’t have the check with me to deposit, so I gave up and stopped at an art supply store, where they had derwent tins on sale. Derwents, as far as I can tell, are the pencil artists equivalent of Malabrigo: high quality, favorites of just about everyone, and pretty all-purpose. I’ve never owned any (Derwents or Malabrigo) but I couldn’t resist a tin of graphitints.
I’m hoping that tonight I can finish the last two seams on the part of my quilt that I’m working on now, and then cast on socks out of the yarn I got last Monday.
Hope that everyone had a good weekend.

Jess - good to hear from you, to bad you don’t enjoy what you are doing. Yeah, I wish I hated this job in the same way.

Have fun and tell your feathered friends about your friends that are tied up in yarn.

UPDATE! (Aug 29) Mom didn’t have a great day today. She was very up and down. The Dr is still keeping her very medicated, and she still isn’t making much sense. Mom is still having issues with her oxygen levels and blood pressures. Both of them are still too low to let her off the oxygen and I.V. On a plus note, they did some mild rehab with her today, and she was able to stand using the coolest walker I have ever seen, and lift one foot off the floor ever so slightly. What a tremendous accomplishment! Even the Therapist had tears in her eyes! I re-read Mom ALL the messages on this group’s wall. Some of them brought us to tears. Please send more messages, as they seem to really brighten her day. If I can bring her happiness, I will do it! You write them and I’ll read them! Much love, Frank and Tanya

UPDATE (Aug 31) Mom had a really good day today. When I got there she was taken off of the oxygen, and was able to keep it off for the day. As long as she remembers to stop, breathe in through her nose and out through her mouth she does fine. That’s a little bit more tricky to do when she’s doing her physio though. During Mom’s physio today she took 9 STEPS! It’s a good thing I was behind her, because I cried like an idiot. I’m so proud of all her accomplishments, no matter how small they seem to her. She never says no when they ask her to do something. If she does something wrong, she wants to know why it’s wrong and how to fix it. She is very determined that she will get out of the Hospital before they believe she will. I would like to thank everyone for all the positive messages and cards. They really have meant the world to Mom. I read them to her on a daily basis, and it gives her the motivation to carry on (especially on a hard day)! A special thanks goes out to Carolyn A. who created a wonderful photo album espcially for Mom. I can’t wait to show it to her. I know she’ll love it. With Much Love, Frank and Tanya

Ann~How did the house hunting go?

Hi to everyone! Work and life have just been crazy. Friends of ours have a DD who’s boyfriend was selling his '07 Mustang to buy a truck/SUV, so we bought it from him last week! Love the car!! :woot: I looked a the '09s last year but didn’t want to pay that much. (Dealer wouldn’t sell under sticker price). Got a great deal and the car is in excellent shape. Has never been driven in the winter. Older DD is going to buy my car that I bought last year as hers has over 67K miles on it. Worked out good all around. Max the crazy puppy is now almost 16 weeks old and has gained 9 pounds since we got him. He’s a good dog, just a maniac at times. DD put 2 videoson youtube if you want to see him. In one he’s attacking some water in a basin (sorry DD says a quick swear word in this one), and in the other, he liked my niece and nephew’s slide. Couldn’t keep him off it the whole time we were there.

Hope everyone is doing well and getting ready for fall. Hard to believe it’s already September!

Dustina thanks for the updates, I have fb but forget to look.

Lisa those videos are very cute! & no worries about the o $*&% word. I’m not offended.

I start my A&P1 class tonight & have caught the kids headcold. Think I’ll be taking a nap again today. I’ve finished Jacob’s sock on Sunday & have yet to co for #2. I really want to knit the Traveling Woman shawl, free pattern on ravelry. But now we’ve got to get into the car and take Bailey to prek.

Can’t believe it’s September! Anyone wanna set a knitting goal for Sept? I’d like to get all 3 kids a pair of socks knit, but doubt that will happen… with all the studying I have to do.

I’ll try to post more tomorrow.
:waving: everyone!

Hi everyone,

Just a quick note to say hi. I started the new job. I’ve done two days cleaning hotel rooms. I haven’t decided if I like it yet but I guess it’ll do for the moment. I’m really tired now though. I’m hoping that it will calm down for a bit soon so there aren’t so many rooms to do, I did an extra hour and a half today because it took so long.

In knitting news I finished a hat last night, its going in the christmas box.

Hope you are all well.

Hey, all. Thanks for the prayers and thoughts for my friend Deanna. Sadly, her baby boy passed away on Sunday night. Baby girl, Addison, is stable. Keep praying, they need it! THANKS!

As sad as that is, it’s to be expected when they are born that early. God bless them & we’ll keep Deanna and her Addison & family in our prayers. Carey, maybe you could make her a preemie blanket to have something special for Addison in the NICU. It was always nice to see parents bring in “homey” things to the NICU, didn’t seem so much like a hospital then.

1st class went well last night, keep in mind I’m used to 3.5 hours class lectures & to be done in just over an hour was wierd. We didn’t get all the info covered he wanted to that first class but I’m pretty impressed with him so far. He speaks clear, slow & deliberate & he uses a microphone so no matter where you are in the class you can hear him. He looks like Curly, though he has a mustash.

Carey: So sorry to hear about your friend’s baby boy. How sad for them. They will be in my thoughts.

Dustina: I am not on Facebook, so next time you post please tell Christine that I am thinking about her and hope to speak to her again soon. Thanks

Dustina, I don’t have Facebook so I really appreciate your updates!

Hi to everyone!! :waving:

:sun: Good Morning Socksters!!

Carey~Oh I’m so sorry to read about the baby and the family…they are in my thoughts and prayers

Lisa~:woohoo:on the car! Max is just too cute :teehee:

Julie~ :teehee: My knitting goal for Sept is to get everything off the needles for the fair :passedout:…I Hope you feel better soon!

rachejm~Yay on the new job :yay:

Carla~no problem :yay:

Sue and Lisa, I posted your comments to Christine, if anyone else would like me to post something just let me know :happydance:. I didn’t get to post them yesterday so just did, last night I was hit by a bad sinus headache hadn’t really had one since we moved out here so I thought maybe it was the other old house…but now fall is going to show me it wasn’t I guess

I went to the dr this morning and had to get blood taken, now I don’t like that at all…the though of blood makes me queasy so I think it worked out for the best kinda being surprised :teehee:…they want to check my thyroid out and two other things…might explain why I’ve been in such a blahh state lately…they think it could also be my b/c pill I’m on the one that now the lawyers are running ads for…I love the last comment if you or your loved one have had sudden death (how can you have that?? and still call and let them know) so either way they are changing my pill… I also found out that last year I had been knitting socks while waiting on the dr (she reminded me it was socks) so she taught her self how to knit and is now addicted…she said I just keep thinking about the pleasant lady that knitted socks and how I want to be that pleasant  (oh if she only knew)

I’m decorated for fall now too except for the outside but that will have to wait till I can find some corn stalks and hay

I gotta sit down today and come up with my knitting class schedule…any tips on them? I will have a beginner’s class and adv beginner’s class…plus others but those are the ones I’m most nervous about…

I hope you guys have a great day of knitting :sun:

Hello everyone!

Carey: So, so sorry to hear about your friend’s baby. They will be in my prayers

Emily: Isn’t it nice when you love what you do?

Julie: Feeling better?

Dustina: I teach a knitting class. I just start another beginning class last Thursday. Last class I had six ladies who had never knitted before. By the end of the two hour class, we had gotten through casting on, knitting, and just barely started purling. I gave them a pattern for a sampler dish cloth that has you do a section of garter, stockinette and seed stitch. There was also some decorative yarn over patterns in the dish cloth that taught increasing and decreasing. By the end of the four week class, they had make pocketbook slippers ( which taught them seaming, increasing and decreasing), another dish cloth, and a round pot holder (which taught them short rows and seaming). I thought we would have gotten a lot further than we did.

In the second four week class, they learned picking up stitches, cabling, buttonholes, and how to knit in the round.

:waving: to everyone else.

I’m working on my FLS. Of course, it was 95 here today so I’m not in any real big hurry to finish it…

Thanks everybody - yes, I really do love what I’m doing, it’s so exciting! There are parts don’t care for: cleaning mews and pigeon coops is really gross, as is prepping raptor food. I had to prep a rabbit who looked just like my brother’s old pet, and I just about started bawling, but those things have to be done, and the rest of the stuff I do totally makes up for it.
Yesterday I got bitten by a red shouldered hawk from rehab. He’s known as Elmer, because he fell into a vat of some kind of glue/plastic/polymer stuff and ruined all of his feathers and destroyed his talons. He is being released tomorrow, so we took him out to a field to creance him, which is where you tie the bird to a drag line so that it can fly but not too far. I was taking off the temporary anklets, so I wasn’t wearing gloves (he was restrained by one of the volunteers) and he managed to stick his head out far enough to get ahold of my hand. Still, it was a fun, new thing to do. He’s definitely ready to be out of here!
Also, everyone seems pleased with the work I’m doing. I made a comment today that it seems like in almost 3 weeks I should have picked up more than I have, but if I remind myself that I’ve only been at the ETC three days, it isn’t so bad. Jen (my boss at the ETC) replied that in 3 days I’ve shown more initiative than the summer interns showed in their three months.
I’m so happy to hear that Christine is continuing to improve!
Dustina: I might suggest offering a “fixing mistakes” class seperately: there are several different types of mistakes that are easily fixed, and I could see that segment being a whole class on its own, and of interest to people of all levels. You could include lifelines in that class, too.
You could also do the two-handed, double knitting, and other techniques (lace, intarsia, etc.) as a special techniques class, maybe one night per technique making blocks of different styles that could be combined as a scarf, blanket, pillows, etc. People could register seperately for each technique so they could do only the ones they are interested in, or register for the whole sequence.
Hope everyone is having a great week - I’m going to a “Knit in” tomorrow night at the LYS!:woohoo:

Dustina I really dont have anything to add to your class list. Jess already brought up the intarsia & lace.
Maybe teach them about the different weights of yarn and what needle sizes are usually suitable.

I am still fighting a dang head cold. The week my sister was here, 2 weeks ago, the kids came down with it, then last week when Dh was on vacation he had it and now it’s my turn. Dang it! The worst part is the scratchy throat, if it was just my nose bugging me I’d be able to deal with that lots better. but it’s both. And I really thought I had it beat but then the monthly curse showed up & that’s when it hit hard.

We’re realizing that ‘summer’ is over and draining the pool, started yesterday morning and it’s still draining. But at least we’re able to use it to water the plants in the yard, there wasn’t any chlorene left in it.

OK y’all gotta go eat dinner so I’ll talk toyou maybe tomorrow? Bailey has 2 cavities, both on 2 of her eye teeth & one covers 2 surfaces and the other covers 4 surfaces; she’ll get those fixed tomorrow morning, this should be interesting.

OK I’ll blame the cold meds, Bailey’s dental appointment isn’t till next Thursday.
I slept in till 8 this morning! wow! that hasn’t happened in years.

:sun: Good Morning Socksters!!

Julie~I hope you are feeling better

Emily~I would have trouble preparing a rabbit too…I hope you had fun at knit night :woot:

Courtney~We only had a couple of days in the 90s this summer…you could send some of that warmth this way :teehee:

Hi everyone! I hope you guys are having a great day!!

Thanks you guys for the tips on the knitting classes. I was hoping for more day classes but they said most of the night classes do better…well with the kids activities that doesn’t leave me many nights open…basically Monday and Saturday lol so I decided this time around to just do the New to continental class, Two handed color work, tips class, and double knitting…then next time maybe I’ll start with beginners. I’m worried that I won’t be able to do that in 2 three hour classes…so we will see

I got my blood work results yesterday afternoon and my sugar and cholestrol numbers were excellent they said…but my thyroid was borderline low…so now JD is pushing B6 and B12 on me…read on the internet that will sometimes help…I go back in 6wks for more blood work…

This morning Roo didn’t want to go at all…held on to me, begged for me to keep her home, said she missed me too much…so hard to make her go on…I told her just get through today and we will have 3 days together…I hope once class starts she will be ok…

I hope you guys have a great day of knitting :sun:
