Any Sock KAL 2

:woot: My LYS is having a sock design contest…and although I knit a lot of socks…I haven’t designed my own…soo what are the rules for designing socks :teehee: …can I pick like any pattern out of a stitch book as long as I come up with the co, heel, toe? and gauge? or is a stich pattern copyrighted and I gotta come up with a new stitch? but then how come there are so many basket weave sock patterns and ribbed patterns if that is the case? Help me brain storm lol…I wasn’t this excited till I talked to JD…I was like eek I can’t design a sock…but with his encouragement I feel like hrmm maybe I can now…

Carey~Great job on the sweaters!! You are fast…:inlove: I bet that job is interesting…I worked in a law firm never boring lol…

dotty~The scarf is sooo pretty!! :passedout:

Jenny~ Very pretty!! :inlove:

I picked up the new IK for spring…I wanted it for the mittens but it has a very pretty wrap in there that I want to make…:happydance:

Carey~The sweaters are beautiful! You knit the girl one fast! I also received my Sockamania invite!

Dotty~Your scarf is beautiful too. I haven’t done much colorwork yet either. I can’t wait to see what the March pattern is.

Jenny~Pretty blanket! Sounds like baby is starting to get you ready for the big day!

Good afternoon to everyone!! I started a sock yesterday. It’s going to be just a plain rib sock because I’m going to try and did it all continental. I’m still trying to get the tension even and I had to go down 2 needle sizes to get the gauge I needed. I am knitting so much looser when I do continental. So far I have about and inch done. I also want to try a short row heel on this one. I’ve never been able to master it, but I watched the videos that were posted way back, and now it seems to make some sense.

Good :knitting: to everyone!

Dustina~I am of no help to you as I’ve never designed anything before, but I wanted to wish you luck with it!

Lisa~Thank you…You’ll get it…and it might end up faster for ya…Purling can be weird at first and I don’t use my middle finger to purl…I flip it over with my thumb :teehee:

Carey~I forgot to reply to your sockamania question…I have just been posting my final photo…but some post progress and if they have questions…

Hello everyone,

I will be a bit busy today so I dont know how much knitting I will be able to achieve to day.
We had a BIG SCARE last night. I was sitting at the kitchen table teaching a friend how to knit. I was also doing laundry. On one trip to the basement to switch loads I thought I smelled something. So I told DH he went and checked it out " I DONT smell anything" figures. So I asked my friend to come the the doorway to the basement. She smelled the same thing. So the Longer I sat there knitting the more I got upset with DH for not doing anything. So I went to find my cell and hide in the bathroom to call my Dad. To whom I owe saving our lives to. DH got a little piffed at me once he seen my dad. Anyways, My dad starts to go down the stars and the minute he reached the very last step into our basement. Dad said " it is carbonmonoxiced" the reason he told me was because you dont smell it (which i know that) but his eyes started to burn very bad. So we called the fire department and they came out to check the levels in the house. Yes, we do have a detector for this gas but it did not go off. We had about 45 parts per million upstairs and when the went to the basement it was higher. Then they checked the furnace that was good. The problem was the Hot water heater. Mind you this was a 2 yr old tank that went bad. The reading that he got from the tank was 955 parts per million. All I know is that I am soooo thankful that I listened to that little voice (god) inside my head telling me I needed to act fast and to call my dad.

Hope all of you have a great day and happy:knitting:

Ok… i forgot to ask something the other day about the sockomania kal. I got my email that I have been add. When do they send out the pattern.

Silegose~ so glad you listened and everything turned out ok and you are all safe. Sometimes you get the pattern on the 1rst of the month…and sometimes it’s the next day…hotmail only allows her to send out so many e-mails per day and so she splits the list and rotates who gets the e-mail first each month…by Monday you should have your pattern…I think the 3rd is the latest I’ve had to wait and that was a month she was sick…

Silegose, how scary!! I’m so glad you listened and acted even though DH didn’t!

 Silegose so glad you listened. That’s so scary, we have two detectors in our house & a 33 year old furnace, I know we’ll have to replace it some day…not looking forward to that expense. Glad you’re ok!

:woot: I’m Done!!! :woot:

So glad to hear y’all have gotten your invites to Sockamania, just 5 more days!!! I can’t wait!

Jenny: that blanket is so pretty! nice job, she’ll be here before you know it.

Pretty blanket, cool socks and

SILEGOSE~~I’m SO GLAD y’all are okay! We had an inservice at school last week for us homebound teachers. We go into some pretty rough neighborhoods, and the police officer who was doing the inservice said, “Always listen to your fear.” YAY! You did and you and your family are SAFE!

Dustian I meant to answer your ? about designing a sock. As far as I know if you just make up a sock using a cuff, let (w/any pattern), heel, instep and toe you have a sock pattern. viola! So I think it would be just fine to use any pattern out there, and add it to your sock. You could do any kind of cuff, seed st, rib, rolled, whatever and then find a pattern that will work with your st count and go to town! My neighbor loves to do her heels in seed st and I think it’s really pretty-and cushy feeling too. Just an idea. how exciting!

Julie, those are some great looking socks!

Yes, it still is scary to just think about it.

Jberry… I love the socks. What yarn did you use? The colors are awsome.

Dustina… I think anyone could design. Find yourself a lace/ eyelet stitch book… and go from there. oh ya, or some kind of cables.

I agree, dustina…I think you can just put some established elements together in a new and different way…I consider my Alex socks to be my own design, simply because I added the cable to the heel and had not seen that exact design anywhere before…and I mean, they’re simple. I’ve always wondered about the heel part, but I think knitting a heel flap is standard and unless you use a specific special technique, like the Sherman toe, it’s pretty much public property.
Thank goodness you called him, silegose !~ God is just making his presence known so clearly lately ! Maybe he’s always done that and I wasn’t aware enough. Either way, I’M A BELIEVER !

Julie, I didn’t know that your yarn had so much brown in it. Those are so HANDSOME ! And, yay, now you’re freed up for Sockamania…you know it’s going to be something to challenge us, because so many of us are in it !

That’s such a pretty baby blanket ! It’s like a patchwork quilt and crocheted blanky all in one.

Thanks-they don’t have my color, but thisis what I used. & I could have easily gone a couple more in. on the cuff/leg. I’ll have dh try them on tonight & get a pic.

I’m hoping for some cable socks-maybe Celtic cables for St. Patrick’s day?

silegose–thank goodness you are okay!! How scary that the detector didn’t go off–maybe I’ll go get a second one in my house just in case.

jberry, those are so pretty!

I’m about to get a little more done on my restarted socks–so far no holes but I haven’t gotten very many rows done.

I’m doing sockamania, too! I’d better hurry or I won’t have any free needles by March 1.

Tangle: I love the toddler sweaters on your blog-what pattern did you use?

BTW for those of you who had seen the you tube video of Cat Bordhi working the wraps on her short row heel-I had to try it, so I knit a little baby sock (wide enough for Caitlin’s fat feet, but not long enough) & to do the heel like Cat worked great, the only thing I noticed is that it seems that is’ quite a bit more shallow than if you were to wrap&turn each wrap-make sense? Anyway I am not going to make another sock, just wanted to try it. I really want to make an afghan, or a sweater for me, or something but not sure if I’m gonna start today or not. The afghan book I have is Thick N Quick Afghans but it calls for holding together 2 strands of ww and size 17 needles-talk about broom sticks after working with size 1. we’ll see.

A drizzling morning, how i love such weather…

Was watching the Oscar yesterday afternoon, around 12plus. I saw 2 of my fav actors - Tom Hanks(he aged a lot since) and Tommy Lee Jones(Jayne loves his MIB most, so sorry that he didnt get his 2nd Leading Actor award))

My Heel is going fine, completed 1 sock and going into the 2nd Heel now.

Jenny - Hang on, we will soon see Emily. A very sweet blanket. Knit or crochet ?

TheKnitter - Have a nice trip, and happy shopping

Carey - last read abt u knitting the baby sweater and now u r done with the 1st n into the 2nd one, u r fast!

Dustina - We know u can do it. :yay: Go ahead and sign up :yay:

Dotty - :inlove: your scarf.

Julie - Been to/tried Cat B.'s wrap, will save n use it for my next socks. For those who wish to try, I think that by usinga thicker yarn like hers, it will be much more easier and able to see the wrap clearly.(I use my stash sock yarn seems a little too thin to see and bring over the “necklace” over the hair…)
another pair of good-looking socks :yay:

Tangle - Your DD socks is nice, very colourful, so is the sweater. I like the Toddler Jacket (pink - ssoooo sweet)

Thought you’d like to see my latest FO:

I’ve only made one, and will NOT be making it’s mate as this is what happens when you play with a stitch design and not realize what’s happening. (It wasn’t supposed to be puffy).
