Any good ideas for a quick throw/blanket/afghan?

I have a friend who has started an orphanage for girls in Mexico, and she is in need of a special blanket for each girl. I thought this would be a great way to dd and me to get started on some charity knitting that we’ve been talking about, but I don’t want to invest a ton of money, nor a ton of time (lots of other things to knit, too!!:))

I’ve looked on the Lion Brand site at some of their “quick knit” things, and most call for Speed Stix (size 50, 25mm). The largest I have is a size 19 (15mm). They seem to call for working 4 strands at once.

I don’t want to invest in new needles and don’t necessarily want to invest in enough yarn to hold it quadruple!

So…does anyone have any ideas for free patterns that would easily work with size 19 or so needles?

Can I just cast on more stitches to get to a larger blanket…or will I end up with too “airy” a fabric?

I’m planning on working up some swatches this weekend with some stash yarn, but would love to have your suggestions before I make final decisions.

You could do the basic ‘Grandma’s Dishcloth’ pattern in whatever yarn/ndl you have. Just work it to the sz you want (no need to calc COs). If you have various yarns some could do stripes for variety, etc. They work up fast, easy.

At thedailyknitter.com they have patterns listed with the needle size. I’m sure you’ll find something there. Or you could use a Speed stix pattern with your 17s or 19s, double stranded with about twice as many sts.
