Anouk help

I’m working on Anouk from knitty.com. http://knitty.com/ISSUEspring04/PATTanouk.html

I’ve got the front done to the shoulder straps, but I’m confused. I’m making the 6 month size, and according to the pattern, I should start shaping the neckline with 35 stitches (got that). Then it says to shape the neckline like this:

Neck Shaping
Work 13 sts in patt, place these sts on a holder, BO 9, work to end in patt. Turn and work 1 row even.
BO 3 sts at beg of next row. Work 1 row even. BO 2 sts at beg of next row. Work 1 row even. BO 2 sts at beg of next row. Work 1 row even. BO 1 st at beg of next row. Work 1 row even.
Rejoin yarn and rep neck shaping for other side, reversing shaping.

So, that sounds like there will be 13 stitches on each side, with 9 in the middle. 13 + 13 + 9 = 35. Got it. But then, if you subtract the BO’s on each side, it’s 13 - 3 - 2 - 2 -1 = 5. That means each shoulder strap has 5 stitches.

Left Front Shoulder (all sizes)
Next row (RS): K until 4 sts remain on left needle, work 4 sts in seed st.
Next row: Work 4 sts in seed st, p to neck.
Next row: K until 4 sts remain on left needle, work 4 sts in seed st.
Next row: Work 4 sts in seed st, p to neck.
Place all sts on holder.

I assume this is the left side as if you’re looking at the dress, not the left side of the wearer, correct?

Right Front Shoulder (all sizes)
Next row (RS): Work 4 sts in seed st, yo, k2tog. [this yo is the buttonhole so make it pretty loose]
Next row: Work entire row in seed st
Next row: Work entire row in seed st
BO in patt.

This is the part that’s really confusing me. If I work 4 stitches in seed stitch, I’ll only have 1 stitch left. (5 - 4 = 1) So what are the 2 stitches for the k2tog?

I’m seeing it the same way that you are. Looks like a pattern error to me, I don’t think we’re both missing something. Since it’s such a small piece, that shoulder strap part, I don’t see why you couldn’t rather seed stitch 3, yo, K2tog.

And when patterns say ‘left front’ or ‘right front’ or whatever like that, I believe it always means left or right as worn.

I was looking at the pattern the other day and some of it was in red like they’d had to correct it for the calendar, do you have an updated copy?

I’m using the pattern off the internet, and it has corrections, but I guess they’ll need one more now!

Also, knitqueen, I looked at the picture on the site again, and it looks like the left/right is as one’s looking at it, not as worn. (It made more sense “as worn,” but oh well.) Thanks for your help with the buttonhole, btw!

You know, looking at it again it does seem like the left front is the left front as one’s looking at it. That’s odd and the first time I’ve ever seen that.

Glad you’re figuring it out though!
