Another question.. edge stitches?

I want to make a dish cloth in a 4x2 basket weave pattern, but I’m confused by the pattern stitches. The pattern says:

Rows 1 and 3 (right side): edge st, p2, * k2, p4; repeat from * to last 5 sts, k2, p2, edge st
Rows 2 and 4 (wrong side): edge st, k2, p2, * k4, p2; repeat from * to last 3 sts, k2, edge st
Rows 5 and 7 (right side): edge st, k1, p1, * p3, k2, p1; repeat from * to last 5 sts, p3, k1, edge st
Rows 6 and 8 (wrong side): edge st, p1, k3, * k1, p2, k3; repeat from * to last 3 sts, k1, p1, edge st

What does “edge stitch” mean? Here is the link to the pattern rows.

Thanks!

There’s a discussion at the site you got the pattern from that discusses “edge stitches.” It seems to be the knitter’s choice of how she/he wants to deal with the edges: slip purlwise? knit and never mind fancy stuff? etc.

The take-home idea is that the edge stitches are independent of the pattern; that’s why we’re told to cast on a multiple of __ plus 2. Those 2 are one edge stitch on either side of the item being knitted.

There isn’t a knit stitch called “the edge stitch,” if that was the original question. :stuck_out_tongue:

You got a good answer up there. If you Google knit edge stitches I think you’ll find more info than you could possibly think you’ll ever want but one day you probably will find most of it useful. There are videos for various ways to handle edge stitches and some of them get a bit more complicated. The basket weave is a nice texture for a dishcloth too.

Thanks so much… I appreciate the help!
