I’m trying to knit a sock using Ann Norling’s pattern. I’m using worsted and following letter D. The largest. Re: Heel Flap it instructs me to knit the 20 rows. However when it comes to picking up Gusset it instructs me to pu and knit 10 sts on each side. But I have 20 rows on my heel flap!! So confused at this point. I hope someone can help me.

Did the pattern tell you to slip the first stitch of the heel flap rows? I think that’s the usual instruction. This leaves half the number of elongated stitches to rows on each side for you to pick up through.
Just so we can be sure which pamphlet this is – does the pattern have a number on the front?
Yes for heel flap Row 1 RS: S1,k1 rep across rows
Row2 WS *sl1. P1, across row
Repeat row 1 and 2 for 20 rows then work one more row
What kind of number?
Yes found it # 12
I also want to add that I have knit many socks with this pattern but it’s been years!! Point being the pattern isn’t wrong.
No worries. Just needed the pattern number to check for errata (couldn’t see any).
Did you remember to slip the first stitch of each row? If so, you should have ten elongated selvedge stitches on each side to pick up through.
So you have a total of 20 rows of knitting (plus one more), but only 10 selvedge stitches, because of slipping the first stitch at the start of each row.
Does that help?
Pattern link, just for reference:
I’m not sure if that helped or not. I have 20 st. So i S1, K1 all the way across the row and that last st. Is knitted. So that last st on row 1 is knitted.
This is how I did for the 20 rows but there were 20 stitches on the sides when done? Of course row2 is s1, p1 and rep those two rows for 20 rows.
I ripped back and restarted the heel flap. I don’t know what the heck I did last time but it’s perfect this time. So thank you so much!
Oh good! Sometimes it’s easier to restart. Happy sock knitting – do come back and tell us when you’ve finished, or post a photo if convenient. Thick socks are so cosy!
I will for sure! I may be back with issues! Thank you so much!!
Ummm I’m still working on my one sock!
So I was so frustrated with my sock especially since Ive knit so many with this pattern it’s just been 10 years ago or so, I had to just put it down. I did pick it back up then got screwed up on Kitchener stitch and ended up ripping back all the way to foot. I am now ready to Kitchener stitch again and sock looks great! Hopefully I’ll be posting a picture soon of a finished sock. One of my problems before is I did not mark my rounds, I did this time.
So I did finally Finish my first sock! Embarrassing but I just finished the leg/ribbing on 2nd sock and once again feel confused 🫤! If you look at the diagram showing knitting needles #1,#2, and #3. Instep is needle number #2 then there is needles 1 and 3 marked as back of heel.
I’m am now on heel flap which instructs me to start heel flap on needle #1, which only has 10 stitches. Looking at YouTube videos they are starting heel flap on needle with most stitches which according to Ann Norling that is the instep! I think this is what messed me up last time! I’m really feeling incompetent
Do the stitches on needle 1 and needle 3 add up to half the total?
If so, it may be that you start the heel flap by knitting across needle one, then turn and knit back across needle 1 and needle 2.
Could you type or show us just the instructions for the start of the heel flap?
Oh my gosh I feel like an idiot. I am indeed getting the needles mixed up in my head. I have figured it out and almost done with heel flap. I swear at times I’m loosing it but actually it’s my ADHD in high gear!! Thank you so much for your
patience and kindness❣️
No worries – socks are odd to knit the first time, or after a long break. And sometimes typing out a question can clarify things when you look at it again later. Feel free to keep asking
You are a sweetheart and so very helpful! I’m on the foot now and so far it’s been going smooth. I’ll be posting pictures when done!
