I’m not sure if it’s the pattern or me, LOL. I haven’t been knitting very long, so i’d like to assume it’s me, but just in case…
I’m knitting these hand puppet things and the pattern calls for an original 30 sts CO. So… got that… worked it up the cuff and start of hand, get to the shaping and here’s the problem:
Pattern says: Inc1, k16, inc1 into next 2 sts, k14, inc1-- [B]34[/B]sts
From what i’ve read, it seems as though i’m supposed to kfb of those 2 stitches, right? That would turn those 2 into 4, right?
So, let’s do a little math. 16+14= 30, 30+inc1= 31, 31+inc1=32,
and 32+inc1 into next 2 (makes 4?)= [B]36[/B]… Just doesn’t add up. It says i should end with 34 sts… Am i wrong in thinking that i should kfb of 2 sts? Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks!
Thanks for replying so fast. wow. I see that it would only inc by 2, but the total would still be 36 because the 2 that im inc on are still counted in the final st count. I mean, it wouldn’t be an inc if the 2 stayed 2 instead of becoming 4, right?

I think I would do the first increase by casting on 1, [U]k15[/U], inc1 into the next 2 sts, [U]k13[/U], and then shift the right hand needle to the left hand and cast on 1. You’re right that the numbers don’t add up. (16 + 14 = 30 and that’s presumably the number of sts on the needle at the beginning of the row, so you don’t have the 2 more sts to increase into.)
Increase [I]into[/I] a stitch would be kfb, not a m1, but if you’re to k16 and k14 that’s the original 30 sts. You can’t do a m1 before the first st and after the last st anyway and next to each other in the middle. I think their number is off - kfb, k16, kfb, kfb, k14, kfb takes 34 sts and you end up with 38. Typos happen in patterns, look at the next set of instructions and see which number works better - 34, 36 or 38

I don’t know if you worked the pattern yet, but I thought I would try to help clarify your confusion with the four count issue.
With the knit front and back stitch/technique when you knit into the front of the stitch you are maintaining the original stitch that you had cast on (or possibly removed if you did a knit 2 together somewhere in your pattern) when you knit into the back of the stitch you are adding or increasing [I][B]one[/B][/I] stitch.
So yes, if you increase [I][B]one each[/B][/I] into the next [I][B]two[/B][/I] stitches you will have a [I][B]total of four[/B][/I] stitches (in that section); however, [I][B]two[/B][/I] of those stitches will be to [I][B]maintain[/B][/I] the [I][B]original 30 sts[/B][/I] and the other [I][B]two [/B][/I]will be to [I][B]add[/B][/I] to the desired [B][I]4 increased sts total[/I][/B].
I sometimes have this problem with knit two together.
