Am I making a children's vest?

Hi there
I have bought everything to knit this vest but once I cast on 92 stitches, it looks rather small. I’m hoping to knit it for myself (a grown woman) and not for a toddler.

This is the first item I’ve tried to knit that isn’t a scarf so I’m unsure whether it’s going to work or how I would go about resizing it if it won’t.

Many thanks in advance!!

It’s quite small. A 36 inch or 92cm chest, that’s the size of the vest, not the size of the body inside it. Usually we like a bit of ease, that is, some gap between body and vest so you may prefer a larger option.
Perhaps look for a different pattern which offers a range of sizes?

Annoying that it says “one size”, but not what size that is!

Did you check your gauge? At the stated gauge, it should be 92cm or 36", which is a pretty small size. There’s very little shaping–you could cast on enough to fit yourself in a multiple of 4 stitches and forge ahead. You’d have to adjust the row count for the armholes and the stitch count around the neck. However, you could run out of yarn if there’s a large size difference

Probably possible to adapt, but maybe a bit much for your first garment? Try looking for other patterns that call for 8mm needles? If nothing else, they’d tell you if you have enough yarn for your size and/or how much more you’d need.

I didn’t even notice at first that the ribbing is cabled…the mix of yarn kind of obscures the stitches.

That’s helpful and probably a very good suggestion. Thank you

Indeed. Sounds a little challenging for me to adapt. Although I was going to ‘adapt’ by not actually cabling the ribbing as, like you, I couldn’t see it was there anyway! Thanks so much for your response

Welcome to the forum!
Are you using the 2 yarns held together and are you getting 10sts per 10 cm? That can also affect size.
Please do us one favor and delete the pattern text. We can’t post a large portion of a pattern even a free one, here due to designer copyright. The link to the pattern is perfect. Keep that in your post. (Use the pencil icon in the lower right of your post to edit.)

Do you use ravelry? Lots of patterns to look through there, here’s a link to the results for size 8mm needles, vest, free
https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/search#needles=8.0mm&availability=free&query=Vest&sort=date&view=captioned_thumbs

You might spot something you like which has a better size range. Do you have more than just the 8mm needle or is that all you bought? It can be a little limiting if you don’t have a few sizes.

Maybe this one which has a similar look?

What a lovely, incredibly helpful community!

Turns out I do have a Ravelry account from years ago. Thank you so much for the suggestion - I do quite like this option so will investigate whether the materials that I’ve got will work. I do have a few other needles, including 7mm, which this pattern you’ve shared also uses.

And the yarn that I bought is from DROPS so should be clear whether my yarn will be suitable

I don’t know how familiar you are with the drops resources, they have this converter for substituting yarns

And it will give you the amount you need to compete the project, there’s a chance you’ll need more for the bigger size.
And a handy page here which describes how many strands of each yarn weight will equal another yarn weight

They also have some swatch samples with various combinations.

If you find an alternative pattern, this one or another, and need some help with working out if your yarn is okay for it etc, just ask.

Another way to choose a pattern is to knit up a good size swatch, wash and dry it, then check your gauge. You can choose a pattern based on the gauge you are knitting at with your chosen yarn and needles.
