[FONT=Comic Sans MS][COLOR=blue]Good Morning all! DH has asked for socks made out of alpaca… His feet are always so cold… and he read that the warmest socks and mittens are made from alpaca. I have never knitted with it (but have fondled lol) Is there a certain type that would be machine washable? He never asks for anything so I would love to do this for him.

Just doing a google search for “machine washable alpaca sock yarn” gave me several hits. I couldn’t think of any off hand. For machine washable, you are going to end up with a blend rather than 100% alpaca unless you felt it Try googling and see what you come up with!
Classic Elite Alpaca Sox Yarn is hand washable and is available online at www.theloopyewe.com.
Hummm…My hubby has cold feet too and asked for a pair of alpaca socks, but I never gave it any thought on if what I got is machine washable:doh: . I guess He’ll get socks that I have to wash by hand now :hmm: . My alpaca is 100% and superfine. He never ask for anything either so I really want to make these for him.
What patteren are you useing? My DH has size 13 feet.

[COLOR=blue]The first socks that I knitted were from Kirsten’s double pointed sock pattern- -she is a wonderful teacher so I am excited to try the pattern above. I hope to stop into a local knitters haven today and ask if she has an alpaca yarn that is a bit of a mix allowing it to go in the washer–dh does laundry at times and they may end up washed that way. Let me know how you make out -

I know nothing about any other yarns listed above, but I used Debbie Bliss alpaca silk DK to make myself a pair of bedsocks since I suffer from cold feet. I can attest that they are definately NOT machine washable nor should they be worn with shoes. I’d say if you are looking to make alpaca socks that are to be worn with shoes or that can be machined washed, you must use alpaca yarn that says it is safe to be machine washed.
I took a trip and accidentally left my socks at home - thought I’d try wearing my bedsocks with my shoes - my perspiration plus walking agitated them enough to felt them slightly which shrunk them a little. Thought you might benefit from my mistake! Love them so much that I had to knit myself another pair! I can say they are so SOFT AND WARM!
