Very very impressive Sir. Can’t wait to see them right side out. Must ask…just how big are those puppies , they look like size 13/14
more like crew socks for size 8-11 mens… but that’ll only be after i finish the heel. for now it’s just a tube.
Totally tubular, man.
I’m sure that expression predates you.
that expression is from my childhood. may god have mercy on the 80s.
Sweetie, totally tubular was around long before the 80s. Groovy was still going strong, things were boss and far out.
I need my walker now so I can shuffle off the bed. :roflhard:
everything old is new again… and again… and again… when the kids were big into the neon accessories/clothes 1-2 years ago, i was feeling very old, remembering my mom talking about her silver lamé strappy platform shoes, circa 1978, that’ve come back a few times over
so i had to sit down, figure out the cast on, the circle-into-square stuff, the ratio, the math for each row to make a pattern i could follow, where & how often to stick in the additional stitches to keep the ratio, a test run with worsted and finally… ta-da! i’m about to start the 8th round.
the white rings with color paperclips are my stitch markers… 1 for beginning of round/start of top, 2 for start of left side, 3 for start of bottom, 4 for start of right side. it’s a 4:3 ratio. by the time it’s finished it will be somewhere between 52"x39" up to 60"x45", depending on how far the boucle yardage gets me.
one question for now… what happens when i run out of cable length to hold all the stitches? it’s already on a 40" cable (magic looping for now, but eventually fully in the round). i have extra cables i can connect, but at a certain point, i may run out of room. i doubt you can buy 10 foot cables…
Multiple circs. You’re working in the round, right? Fill up one long circ, start with another. Just consider them long floppy DPN.
thank you! that was my suspicion, just have to treat it like what it is, a giant in-the-round project on either a giant magic loop or oversized double/triple/tredecuple* circs…
*that’s 13, y’all…
Are you Triskaidekaphobic or arachnophobic? Arachnid knitting as described in this big Moebius cowl project is what you’re gonna have to do methinks. Do you have enough tips of the same size? I can’t imagine struggling with one ML set up when it starts getting really big.
my fears are crazy heights (as in skyscrapers, not the roof of my house) and snakes. yuck.
thanks for the link. i have enough cable lengths and connectors, and an extra set of interchangeable tips, so i can get as far as another really long circ-as-dpn… but if/when the whole thing needs to convert over to 3 or 4 long circs, i’ll have to head to joann’s.
i’m sure some of you already know about it… but i just discovered the free pattern testers group on ravelry… designers needing test knitters for new patterns… you get a pattern, knit/test it, report back, and then get the sparkling pattern afterwards for FREE

there’s a ton of open projects. some have different sizes, so they need a group for smalls, larges, etc… some have strict done-by dates, some are more open, just depends, but each project has a full description.

Hubby has made me a cable line (circular needle set) for when I knit my shawls, that’s about 60in long from needle tip to tip . For this set he bought thin flexible tubing off of Amazon and then cut it to size and super glued it to the ends of my wooden needles . Works great !
In a pinch you could cut the needles off and use it to siphon gas.
Ingenuity at it’s finest. I have a 60" cable from Knit Picks. Comes in handy for picking up stitches up one side of a sweater front, round the neck, down the other side. It’s handy if I want to do multiple biggish pieces at one time. If I ever knit anything long enough to need it, 'twill be handy there too.
This is the tubing he uses. In the link I posted those or different then the one hubby made for my shawl needle set. Those are attachments to fit threaded metal needles that I have. It’s much easier to buy the plastic tubing and super glue them to a wooden circular set of needles and you can make them as long or short as you need.
thanks for the info! i think for my own sanity (and lack of skills when it comes to DIY toolmaking) i’ll order the 52" cord for the denise needles. it’ll be a full foot longer than my current biggest cord, and it’s only $6.50.
so far my 40" cable is handling 154 total stitches and has plenty of room left. i’m on the 41st round of my pattern. i’ve already joined the 4th ball of white (russian join of odds & ends as i go, starting with smallest, working my way out to the bigger ones). it’s looking very… blankety. i also decided to alternate which rounds are knits and which are purls, so it’s getting a water ripple effect… 8 center rounds knit, next 7 garter, next 6 knit, next 5 garter, etc etc. will post a picture when i’m up to round 50.
couple things i’ve realized so far, even with all my pre-planning…
if i had done all knits for the increase rounds, and all purls for the plain rounds, i’d have gotten fully reversible garter stitch (smacks forhead!).
if i had been smarter about the ripple effect, i could have done the center 8 rounds as all knits (the increase and plain rounds), and the next 7 as all purls (the increase and plain rounds), and the next 6 as all knits and next 5 as all purls, etc etc, i would have a truly reversible fabric with the full ripple effect on both sides.
if i stopped around the 30th round and bound off, i could have done multiple rectangles and pieced a blanket together for an interesting play of color…
all ideas for future projects…
You need some axle grease, I hear the gears turning. :teehee:
Isn’t that the way innovation always happens? When you need a test knitter, let me know. Maybe I’ll be brave enough to try it.
Can’t remember how many times I’ve had a :doh:moment but I’m willing to bet we’re not alone.
I can even smell the gears smoking as I’m reading your post I’m really proud of you for knitting off the grid !
Knitting Rebels R Us?
Hey, with odd bits of yarn to use I have few options right now but to figure out how to mix and match. I think you and X deserve a big hand for how you’re putting on big knitter britches and developing your own projects from the get go.
:yay: :yay: :yay: :yay: :yay: :yay:
wearing my big boy pajamas (it’s too late now for britches)
ready for actually knitting the heels in the morning. all the other prep work and inside finishing is done. watched about half a dozen afterthought heel videos on youtube, a few of them multiple times.
yay me - progress! (and only a week after i thought i’d get them done)
