I’m starting to knit this toy for my young grandson and I foresee a real challenge in sewing the many parts together.there are no diagrams or photos for people like me who are visual learners. However my immediate problem is the description of how to Shape top edges and sides of the cab.
As follows:- Next 2 rows cast off 18 stitches, then cast on 5 stitches,SS to the end.
If I do this I get 2 holes,on each corner of the middle stitches.
Should I cast off 18 sts and SS to end and then again followed by cast on 5 stitches SS to end twice but that would be 4 rows knitted and not 2?
If anyone has made this toy engine I would really appreciate any tips and advice about sewing it together.
Many thanks in hope for a solution.

Wow, big project!
It’s beyond me but someone will be able to help.
So many pieces to this project! It’s certainly a labor of love. This Ravelry project from dmoon helps. See the 4th photo down in her project photos. It’s in the lower right of the photo and labeled “cab front and inner tank side.”

Work the two rows as given: cast off 18sts, cast on 5sts and stockinette stitch to the end. Turn and again cast off 18sts, cast on 5sts and stockinette stitch to the end.
Here’s a video for casting on in the middle of a row that may help.

For 5 sts you could just use the backward loop cast on. The knit cast on (see 2:00min) gives you a neater edge but both a shown in the video.
Thank you so much Salmonac.
That is very helpful and gives me a clear picture of how the pieces fit together.
If I had read the comments on Ravelry before I started I may not have taken this on but now I have begun I’ll give it a try.

Like almost all Alan Dart patterns it’s intricate and detailed but the result is adorable. Good luck with it and please let us see the completed Thomas!
