I am knitting The Professor Vest by Elizabeth Morrison and need a bit of advice on the armhole and neck shaping. The part of the pattern with which I am having trouble reads as follows:
“LEFT FRONT
With smaller needles, CO 40 [44, 50, 54, 58] sts. Work k1, p1 ribbing 1.5”.
Switch to larger needles. Work in pattern stitch until piece measures 13” or desired length to match back.
Shape armhole and neckline
Row 1 (RS): Bind off 6[8, 9, 10, 12] sts at beginning of row. work across until last 4 sts; ssk, k2.
Row 2 and subsequent even rows (WS): P2, work across in pattern st to last 2 sts; p2.
Row 3 (RS): K2, k2tog, k to end.
Row 5: K2, k2tog, k to last 4 sts, ssk, k2.
Decrease in this manner at armhole edge every other row a total of 6 [8, 9, 10, 11] times and at same time, work ssk decrease 2 sts in from neck edge every 4th row, 13 [13, 20, 20, 20] times, then every 6th row 5 [5, 0, 0, 0] times. If necessary, work even to match back armhole length.
— 10 [10, 12, 14, 15] sts. Place on holder.
In other words, a row that contains both armhole and neck decreases would be worked like this: K2, k2tog, work to last 4 sts, ssk, k2.
A row that contains only a neck edge decrease would be worked like this: Knit to last 4 sts, ssk, k2.
A row that contains only an armhole decrease would be worked like this: K2, k2tog, k across.
All wrong side rows are worked like this: p2, work in pattern to last 2 sts, p2.”
Everything up to row 6 is clear to me, but past that has me scratching my head. The pattern does not come with a chart, and omits stitch count for the decreases.
Can anyone offer advice on how to proceed? Thank you for the help!
