Adjusting back-of-hat short rows to be even?

Alrighty, let me see if I can explain how I’m hung up on this hat I’m making. I’m making a charcoal and purple cat hat for my daughter for Christmas, and we went through some patterns, and she says she likes the style of this hat with garter stitch ear flaps: Simple kitty hat. I’ve been doing some adjustments and have figured out sizing for her. I also didn’t like how the beginning of round jog was just behind the ear flap rather than centered in the back. So I adjusted for that.

Now I’ve latched on to the shaping for this other cat hat, circa 2017: my pussy hat, version by susanreckford. It uses short rows to shape in the back to bring the ears a bit more forward. But as written, if I apply it to my already made ear flaps, the shaping has one ear flap centered, rather than being across what will be the back. (on the original, this part wouldn’t matter, since the brim is the same all around.) So now, I can adjust things to make the short rows in the right place in relation to the ear flaps, but then the side to the left of the beginning of round will be higher than the side on the right, I think.

Is there a way to even this out so the rise in the back isn’t lopsided?

The beginning of round is at the center back and you’d like the short rows to cross the beginning of round marker and be centered on that marker. Is that right?

Can you knit around to the BOR marker, k23, W&T, p44, W&T then continue to knit around? Or am I imagining something that doesn’t exist?

These are both adorable hats especially the earflap design!

Yeah, I’m aiming to have it centered like that. But what’s giving me pause is that I’m concerned that will end up with the side that I started out with k23 being higher than the other. Or am I overthinking it?

Please don’t ask me how or why but it should work out fine. I think the sides will be even. This is similar to back neck shaping on a sweater and it works there too.

Fair enough! I’ll just go with it and see how it turns out.

I agree, the sides will be even and go with it!

It might be a wee bit off, but only by one row, which won’t be noticeable except maybe where you switch from garter to stockinette. You could do the adjustment used for jogless stripes in the round if it bothers you.
