I found an adorable hat that only comes in newborn size. I would like to make one for my 3 year old. I know how to measure her head circumfrenc, so I know how many stitches to cast on. As far as height, I think I measure from one ear, over top of head, to top of other ear and divide by two. My question is how do I know how high to make the hat before I begin decrease rows?
The height measurement won’t help because you knit for X inches from the Cast on, then start decreasing which can take a few more inches. For a 3 yo, probably knit for about 5", then decrease. And the Cast on st number should be about 1-2" less than her head measures.
Well, knitting stretches, especially if you start with ribbing, so if you make a hat the exact size, it won’t be snug against the head, but rather loose and a good gust of wind could blow it off.
