My friend Steve is about to go on a co-op job to Alaska for six months (over winter!) and I told him I would knit him a bright orange hat (my roommate is going to knit him some matching mittens), but I have yet to find a pattern that doesn’t look “girly.” I’m not a very good knitter yet - I started about ten months ago. I’ve made a few hats (just finished a cute cabled one for myself!) and I can do things like cables, and my roommate can explain just about anything else to me…So my only issue right now is FINDING a pattern.
Any ideas? If worse comes to worse, I’ll just make something up…it’s gotta be done in two weeks!
Thanks. By the way, this is my first post here, but I’ve been lurking for a week or so. :o
I liked the earflap hat, but I don’t think Steve would. He doesn’t like anything. I’m making it up as I go along…It’s kind of like the J Crew hat, I guess, but with chunky yarn on 10 1/2 needles. I started it a couple of hours ago and hope to finish it tomorrow, so I’ll post a picture if it doesn’t look too bad.
If he’s going to ALASKA, you might consider casting on provisionally, knitting the hat, then picking up the CO sts, knitting the hat AGAIN in the opposite direction and then SHOVING one half inside the other to make a nice, doubly warm hat!!
Another easy alternative for a cold weather hat: when it’s done, get some lightweight polar fleece in a coordinating or dark color. Cut it to fit inside the hat (not counting the part above the decreases). It’s basically a tube the diameter of the hat. Handstitch with matching thread. It’s much easier than it probably sounds and makes a huge difference, especially if the hat is going to be worn in the wind.
Okay, so the decreases aren’t terrific. I made it up as I went along and could have done MUCH better…I think I’ll make him a doubleknit hat and send it to him for Christmas, when I have more time. But it covers my ears and is quite large on my head, so it SHOULD fit him. I’m really disappointed at how plain it is, but that’s what he wanted, so I suppose I should get over it.
