A hopeful substitution for a cabling needle

I’m new to this forum, and the first thing i want/need to ask…

If you don’t have a small wooden cabling needle handy for the cables, can you just use a similar sized crochet needle until you can get a cabling needle?

I think you could, just make sure to insert it hook end first and knit off the end without the hook.

You could try a pencil or short section of dowel or bamboo skewer sharpened at both ends (but you might want to take out the lead points of a pencil),

A chopstick too, if it’s small enough (they usually come out to about size 9/5.5 mm). Or use a smaller size dpn.

I haven’t tried it myself, but some knitters actually prefer to cable without a cabling needle. Another slightly different techniquehere.
