A couple of FOs and a WIP by a newbie

Be my knitting buddy, please!!

Im also new at this and you are right about where I am. (and my youre my age and have a blog also)

I can cable, but haven’t actually completed anything yet. I think I might begin working on a cabled belt of some sort.

Do you order your yarn online?

Jillie, you should try your hands out at different patterns. I had been doodling with small swatches just to try out patterns. Cables are a bit awkward to work with (I can’t get these U-shaped cable needles here - I live in Germany, but I’m not German - but only these striaght needle with a V in it), but the result is rewarding and well worth the try! I started learning the basics with the free videos here on KH, but cables and twists and all those tricks I’ve learned from Knitting for Dummies

Ingrid, thank you very much for your comment! Keeps me going well!

MarieApril, Hahaha, sure I can be your knitting buddy. No, I don’t buy yarns online (not yet)…I haven’t found a German online yarn shop (I live in Germany), besides I’ve my favourite yarn shop here that could get me most of the things I need at the moment:

Although when I start doing more daring things and need special yarns, I should start looking online then…although I’m sure the shop could order things in for me. BTW, what’s your Blog URL then?

Wow, I can’t believe you’ve just started knitting!! Both of the scarves are beautiful! I call my ‘mistakes’ creative designing, lol.

Welcome! I think this group is one of the friendliest (and funniest  ) groups around-I know I have found it so.

Welcome! :waving:

I love that you’re just diving into knitting–it’s the only way to go, mistakes and all!

Your scarves are lovely–they look so cozy and warm, too! That new one is going to be gorgeous. I love the yarn selections.

Happy New Year!

I did my first pair of socks a couple of weeks ago and was happy to finish the first…when it got time to do the second I felt very “been there, done that”. So now I’m doing a pair of socks both at the same time on circular needles (http://www.socknitters.com/2circs/index.htm)! Really hairy at first to cast on and set up, but now that I’m well into the cuffs it is a great technique. Might feel differently when it comes time to turn the heels! I’d suggest doing socks on DP needles first before trying this method…

Wonderful job! And welcome to the forum.

njknitter, thank you for your link! I tried to knit on dpns yesterday and have something going. Although it’s very loose, I’m going to keep on going doing this practice sock. It’s my very first knit-in-the-round project and my first time working with dpns. Kinda fun actually to find that I suddenly have one or two stitches appearing magically on each dpn. LOL But that doesn’t matter, I just want to keep knitting this one side (I have only enough yarn for this one side, so it’s solely for practicing).

Mer, thanks for welcoming me!!!

:cheering: great job! The scarves look great! :XX:

Dang, I feel like I’ve just been left in the dust! Very nice knitting… and you’re so ambitious. I’m still messing around with scarves, though I want to move onto something more dangerous like a hat and someday be good enough to knit socks. I don’t have the confidence yet to take on dpn’s though I really really want to learn!

Is your claim to fame that you’re a ‘natural’ or do you think “Knitting for Dummies” and Stitch n Bitch helped a lot? What made you decide to start knitting? Hmm maybe need to make a trip to Amazon and look for that book.

Mailgirl, Thank you!

Marni, no idea whether I’m leaving you in the dusts or not. I mean, I’m still knitting scarves and iPod-Socks…the normal sock on dpns is pretty daring, but I’ll see how far I’ll get. I haven’t yet claimed myself to be a natural, but some of the people are saying so. The only thing I’ve learned from Stitch N Bitch sessions so far was how to bind off. Otherwise, the emphasis lies on ‘bitching’. LOL Yes, ‘Knitting for Dummies’ has tought me LOTS, although sometimes I find the instructions hard to understand, but I could always try it out and in no time, I’d figure it out what they meant. Definitely look for that book, it’s worth it.

The new scarf’s coming along nicely now…I need to figure out another way to join the colours. Up to this moment, I’ve been knitting a row in double yarn in different colours, but the yarns kept twisting and so the joints don’t look that tidy…hmmmm…I mean, this scarf’s going to be for myself anyway and I can live, if not actually love my ‘artistical freedom’ and individuality expressed by such way. LOL Otherwise, any suggestions about joining yarn colours apart from tying a knot on the edges?

BTW, Marni, I forgot to mention in my last reply why I started knitting. First, I was looking for a new hobby. Second, I want to do something productive…and third, which is the most important reason, I was trying to find a therapy to calm myself down and distract me away from the problems I’m having with my bf and the fact that our relationship is falling apart…but well, nothing to be talking about here.

Did you try any of the “basic techniques” shown in the videos on this website?

MarieApril, yes, of course I did. If I’m right, you’re talking about my joining the yarns. However, it’s just the fact that I don’t want to felt the colours together, or make a knot. But I think that I’m going to make a knot anyway and then try tucking it into the side. For what I’ve done already…well, I’ll just have to try tugging it around to tidy up a bit.

You don’t even have to knot. Start knitting with the new color and you can weave in the ends later.

Ingrid, yeah, I know…the suggestions had been made to me. I actually wonder why I didn’t do that in the first place…and ended up knitting a whole row with the two colours. sighs So, I thought that I’d just carry on knitting up the two colours together for the first three colour changes…well, after this, I’ll just knit with the new colour.

Wow! Excellent work! I’ve only known how to knit for 24 hours - I’m inspired!!

Your stuff is amazing. lol I wish I could have the courage to fallow a project through. lol Keep up the good work!

Lovermont, Calabaza: Thank you very much! Such comments always encourage me!

So, peeps, tragedy striked my scarf last night. While knitting it, I pulled too hard and some stitches came off the needles, unravelled themselves into several rows below. I tried to save it with my crotchet needle…but it was far from saving. So, I’ve frogged the last part and starting off from the beginning again (I can’t unravel all of them, because I’ve weaved in the yarns already and made some minuscule knots when I’ve done it). Oh, well, I guess that it’s better so, so that I can make the scarf perfect this time, especially with the colour joins. fingers crossed

Lesson learned: Don’t knit at 3 in the morning, especially when you have hardly slept the day before.

Holy cow!!! You’re not only good, you’re fast too.
Lana :x:

Its funny that when I’m up really late knitting, I feel like I’m flying. In the morning I notice all the goofs.
