My pattern (Ravenna cable pull from elann) is knit sideways. I’ve never done a sideways pattern. Coming up the first arm toward armhole (such as it is), pattern has the increases coming fast and furious: “On every other row 1 st 3 times, 5 sts twice and 40 (38) sts once…”
My question is, how do you do several increases together (the five, then the 40)?

Sleeves: cast on 40(44) sts, work 1 return row in rib patt, then work basic patt as foll: edge st, K12 (14), 14 sts cable patt foll chart, K12 (14), edge st. Sleeve shaping: inc 1 st on every 12th row 5 times (1 st on every 10th row 6 times) = 50 (56) sts, then inc 1st on 6th row once, 1 st on every 4th row twice (once), then on every other row 1 st 3 times, 5 sts twice and 40 (38) sts once = 162 sts. Over these 162 sts cont until work measures 22" - 55 cm = 110 rows, then divide work at center for neck and finish each side separately over 81 sts each, working cable sts without crossing. After 11 7/8" - 30 cm from beginning of neck or total length 33 3/8" - 85 cm cont again over all 162 sts, starting crossing at the same height as at the end before neck shaping. After a width of sweater of 20 1/2 (22)" - 52 (56)cm or total length of 37 3/4 (38)" - 96 (98)cm start dec. Work dec in reverse to inc = start with binding off 40 (38) sts once. When work measures 55 1/8" - 140 cm end sleeve with 1 row in rib patt.
Okay that is the section of the pattern i think you are on. It looks to me like it is just telling you how many stitches you need to increase but not telling you where. I THINK you are supposed to just space the increases evenly.

Argh-h-h! I’ve doing all the inc so far at the end of rows. I suppose I could do the 5s and 40 inc randomly across, but this is so weird I’m really uncomfortable.
BTW, earlier in the patt it says, “inc 1 st on every 12th row 5 times…” and if you took that literally, you’d end up with 45 sts instead of the 50 sts after the = sign. That is, it really should say, “inc 1 st ea end every 12th row…”
Does this make sense?
I think it means inc 1 st on rows( every 12th row) 12,24,36,48,60 that is your 5 times
looking at it, Momwolf could very well be right…what an obnoxious way to write a pattern though! :shock: I have a feeling she is right though!

Julie, as I said, if I had done that first set of increases the way you suggest, I would end up with 45 sts, while the patt says you should have 50 sts. Thus, I assumed that the inc should be at EACH END of the rows.
The section that’s really troubling me says

Should those 5 and 40-st increases be done at the end of rows or evenly across as Brendajos suggests? As I said, I have been doing the increases at each end of rows; but the idea of doing 5 sts and then 40 (!) sts at each end of a row was what I could not understand. I have never seen instructions to do more than one or two inc sts at the end of rows.
I am truly stuck here…

then do 40 sts on the next 40 rows
This is how I would do it
I think I will be way over my row count that way, Julie. I’m now on r 75 and have not begun the mystery increases yet.
The pattern does say this: “NOTE: all increases and decreases are worked at each end when indicated.”
So now, I’m back to asking how you do multiple increases together, one after the other? I’ve only done a single inc at the end of a row before. What is the best method of doing these so that you don’t have a holey mess?

Thanks to elan.com’s quick response to my query (on Sunday!), I didn’t frog the project. (I was minutes from doing so.)
Turns out the multiple-serial increases require a cable cast-on, instructions which Diane from elan.com provided me.
