I am thinking of ordering a pair of 9 inch circular needles. This might be sort of an odd question to ask, but I am wondering what would be a good size to get. I know everyone knits differently, so I am sure this varies from person to person. I want something that would be most versatile for me. In most of the stores I shop at it is not easy to find fingering weight yarn for socks, so I think I would be knitting more with sport or dk. The needles cost about 20 bucks here so I really don’t want to order mulitple ones right now. My goal is to learn to knit socks and mittens.
Hmmm, perhaps my problem has just resolved itself. I see that the 4mm chiaogoo needles are on sale right now for 10 bucks so maybe I could get those and order a 2.75mm.
Ooh, I love a sale! Thank you for the notice and let us know how the 9 inch circulars are working out.
It’s on Amazon Canada. Most everything would cheaper on the US site anyways. It’s the bamboo ones too. I haven’t tried bamboo before but these look pretty good. For some reason only the 4mm ones are much cheaper.
Bamboo is very nice to work with. It’s a bit “grabbier” than metal needles but has a pleasant feel.
Update:
I ended up ordering stainless steel 9 inch circulars. I followed an instructional video by The Crazy Sock Lady to knit socks with 9 inch circulars and just finished a pair.
I was really pleased with the needles. I found them easy to work with and was able to do the entire sock with them with except for the toe decreases, which I did with longer circulars and magic loop.
Success! The socks look terrific. I’m glad the you liked the 9 inch circulars. Many knitters find them too difficult on the hands but you have them working well.
Yeah, they are pretty tiny. I can see why some people might not find them comfortable, but I would encourage people to try them if they get the chance. I can’t seem to get the hang of DPNs and using the 9 inch circulars for the majority of the sock seems like it would be a lot easier than magic loop as long as you don’t find them too small to work with.
