Pattern 5469
Confused by sleeve instructions on Aran jumper. Knitted front and back but can’t understand sleeves. Saying 4 rows are set pattern then continue in patt as given for back as set and working inc stitches into K4, P4, block part inc 1 at at each end of next and every 4th row. I thought I just kept repeating and increasing the 4 rows but on the photo of the aran the whole pattern seems to be included in sleeve. Sorry if you can’t understand this. So am I knitting the 16 rows of patterns and somehow putting the 4 rows in the middle.
Hello
Could you tell us the name of the designer or publisher please? It’s tricky to look up thr pattern with just the number.
Could you say exactly what the row says for the sleeve as it seems there is a 4 row repeat and a 16 row repeat but that may not be the case.
If you could also take a picture of the section of the pattern that’s giving you trouble, that would help a lot. It’s OK to post part of a pattern, just not the whole thing.
You have mentioned the back has an16 row rep pattern, that will be used on the sleeve. These 4 rows are not added to those 16 rows but rather they are showing how the pattern is positioned on the sleeve to get you started.
As we don’t know the 16 rows can you check are these 4 rows making matching with a part of your 16 row rep? That’s what I expect from what it says in the pattern.
Also is there a section called “block pattern”? It should have a k4 p4 in it , this is where it is saying to put the increases.
Whilst you don’t have an answer yet, just more questions, we’ll be able to work this out eventually.
It is a round neck sweater and the set 4 rows are the same of part of the first 16 row cable.
It does increase on K4 P4 block. I’m beginning to understand it with your help and I’m going to give it a go. I can undo it if it’s not right.
I don’t understand why they had to pick those 4 rows out if I’m just knitting the 16 row pattern anyway. I’m hoping g all will be revealed once I start knitting.
Thank you for being so kind to help. I might be back on if I can’t work it out.
The sts in the 4 rows add up to 62sts for the sleeve in the first size. So you’ll work the 4 row pattern over those 62sts.
The rows 1-4 set the pattern placement which looks like a version of the front or back central fancy cable. That pattern has a soft cable on either side and then the edge sts. The edges start out as p2 on the RS rows. The increases will occur in the p2 sections until you have 4 purl sts. Then the increases will be incorporated into the pattern as knit sts until you have 4 knit sts. As you continue with increases, this checkerboard pattern will repeat in blocks of 4knit, 4purl.
If you zoom in on the photo especially of the dark red version, you can just see checkerboard pattern at the underarm.
Thank you so much, I understand it now. I looked at the photo and mistook the checkerboard pattern for the chevron and so that confused me. It all makes sense now. A big thank you, I couldn’t have worked that out alone. I’ve just started knitting again after not knitting for two decades. I’ve throw myself in the deep end I think. I’m loving knitting again though.
Hi
I know it’s been along time since I first contacted you. I have finished the jumper you helped me with. Many mistakes when knitting and sewing sleeves in but it’s done. Not too bad. Please find photo of completed jumper.
