4ply / dk

I’ve got lots of Patons fairytale 4ply (fingering weight) bought at a recent tradeshow - my question is if I hold it double, will it knit to DK patterns, or will it still be too thin? I’ve got a baby to knit for due in Feb, and would love to make something for the mom and it seems most baby patterns call for DK yarn. Thanks!

It would be well worth a gauge swatch.

Thanks Ingrid, I’ll give it a go

It should be close enough to sub for DK yarns, but as Ingrid says, you’ll only know for sure by knitting it up.

I have knit with a lot of Patons Fairytale and I thought it was close to what is called a DK weight without doubling it. But I could be all wet. Maybe there is more than one weight of Patons Fairytale. I have never thought of it as fingering weight, but closer to sport or DK.

I just went downstairs and hunted up a skein of my Patons Fairytale and it is marked DK on the skein and knits up to 22sts = 4 inches. But like I said maybe in comes in more than one weight. I know you guys in the UK figure things a little different than we do in the states, so maybe DK here is not DK there.

Patons Fairytale comes in both 4ply and Double Knit. The 4ply knits as 28 stitches per 10cm and the DK knits as 22 stitches per 10cm.

I find it knits up nice and softly. The only thing I wonder about doubling the 4ply is whether it will be a firmer fabric than if you used Double Knit, but its worth a try.

Thanks for pitching in everyone!

If it does come up at a denser knit by doubling it, use larger needles.

I have a feeling that by doubling you 4ply yarn you will end up with something more of an aran weight and will have to change you needles accordingly…there are loads of baby patterns using aran weight yarn…So happy knitting x
