4-Year Old Girl's Chemo Cap - I Need a Pattern

The daughter of one of the members on my Bible study forum is going through chemo treatments and I thought I’d make her a cute girly chemo cap to brighten up her days. I’m still a beginner, so it needs to be easy and fast and I can also use tips on which yarn(s) to use.

Thanks!

This is the best link for chemo cap patterns and tips; there are a couple of patterns that are sized for younger children.

Here is a yarn tip: use very soft yarn! A lot of people who lose their hair can have very very very sensitive scalps. Therefore, some yarns can be irritating. The softer, the better.

Thank you! I don’t have any kids, so I will follow the pattern, but have no one to try it out on. I will buy baby yarn.

How about Yarn Bee’s Chenille like I’m using for my Textured Chenille Sweatshirt???

Here’s an adorable Beehive Hat. I won’t be making this one, because she wants pink, but it’s cute nonetheless!

I found this one for a Chinchilla Hat, and it calls for Chinchilla Yarn. I’ve never heard of that. Is it soft? Affordable?

Here’s a few yarns that would work or any soft yarn will do.
Knitpicks Shine - a nice soft cotton blend in pretty colors
Microspun I made a couple dishcloths from this and it’s sooooo soft!
Bernat Softee Baby

Here’s a few cute hats, but again any hat will do.

I created this one and it can be made any size.

This child’s chemo cap is SO cute, I had to share, JIC anyone is also looking:
Flore Hat

:notworthy: Jan that bow hat is TERRIFIC, I think THAT’S it! I know any hat will do, but I’m picky. Yours is awesome! I don’t know the little girl, but her dad told me via email that she’s into pink & pink.

I love the little tie, I will make a couple of different colors so she can change it if she gets bored. You mentioned in that post that you would submit a more complete pattern, is this not complete? Can you PM me a complete one if not???

I may have some questions about the pattern. I’m bad about directions, but I usually eventually find my away. Like I said, I don’t have any kids, but I guess I can borrow one to try the hat on. Will your instructions fit a 4-year old’s head??? Will it get bigger when it’s washed/blocked?

 Sorry if those are stupid questions, I’m still fairly new at this.

I’m glad you like it! :cheering:

I don’t have a 4 yr old around to measure either. It was made with worsted weight yarn for this size so keep that in mind. I’ll make one up today to make sure it’s all good.

Thanks!!! :muah:

I’m still unclear on the whole yarn weight thing. Worsted weight = baby yarn???

You need to learn about yarn weights if you want to make garments that fit properly. Worsted is heavier weight than baby. Here’s a few links to help.

Standard Yarn Weight System
Reading a yarn label

I’ve cast on for the hat in sport weight.

this is just been my experience but Chenille does not “give” much when you knit. In my expeirence it is hard to work with and also it probably is not machine washable so probably not a good idea for the little girl or her parents to wash it.

I bought Boocoos of lion chencille thicknquick when I first started knitting…I finally just had to give up~!! :wall:
For me it just won’t "give’ enough to work with!

The bernat softee baby is SUPER soft and machine washable~! I have a swatch I made and it feels great~

dont forget to post pics~!!

Lu, I have a kids’ version of this hat – I made the sample in KnitPicks Shine and it’s sooo soft. Just PM me if you would like me to send you the pattern.

I just bought some Bernat Softee Baby @ Walmart. I wasn’t sure whether I should, because it IS 100% acrylic and everyone says to use natural fibers because a chemo patient’s head is more sensitive. BUT it was so soft I figured it would be OK.

Jan you are SO sweet, thank you! What needle size are you using? Let me know what gauge you got too. As soon as you tell me I’ll be casting on to see how it goes for me.

I definitely WILL post pics! :eyebrow:

Hi

I know that someone posted earlier Bev’s Country Cottage but below is a link to the size page

I use the softest baby yarn I can find to make chemo caps and they seem to be fine.

There’s an interesting idea for making hats with hair, rather than a full wig which can be itchy and hot in summer.

www.HatswithHair.com is a company based in Florida - they’re extremely helpful and friendly.

Thanks Limey (great name for a Brit, BTW ;))!!! :happydance:

I am getting close to done and I changed the pattern a bit, but will have the original as an alternate method. I am use Bernat Softee Baby and size 3 and 4 - 16in circs. I’ll post a picture and tell you the specs soon…and the pattern of course, too.

Jan, you’re an angel!!! :muah: :muah: :muah:

If you like, I have a 4 year old and I can measure her head for you.

:pout: My heart twinged when I saw the title of this thread. I couldn’t even imagine… My thoughts will be with that little girl.

That would be helpful, thanks!
