2x2 Ribbing doesn't look right

Hi,

I’m relatively new to knitting (I’ve knitted 3 things so far) and I’m currently knitting a beanie using a knitting kit. It called for rib stitch but I feel like my rib stitch doesn’t look right. I am pretty sure that I am doing the knit and purl stitches right as I have watched so many videos to try and figure out what I could have done wrong.
I do knit quite tight, not sure of that’s the problem.
Does anyone know why my rib stitch looks like this (see picture) instead of the knit being raised and the purl being lower? I’m not sure what I’m doing wrong :frowning:

Thanks!

Welcome to KnittingHelp and to knitting!
You’re knitting looks very nice and even which isn’t easy to do when you begin. You’re right however that there seems to be something amiss with the ribbing. Here’s a video that may help if you’re knitting back and forth (as opposed to in the round):

Once you’ve started the best way is to look at your stitches. If you see a V, knit it. If you see a bump, purl it.

Do you also knit and purl on the wrong side the same way as you knit and purl on the right side? Maybe check to see if you are knitting on the purl stitches and purling on the knit stitches on the wrong side? You might already know this but just in case, that knit stitch becomes purl stitch and purl stitch becomes knit stitch on the other side…

Hi Salmonmac!!!

I watched that ribbing video and was surprised to hear her say “after you turn your work, you will be purling the knits and knitting the purls”. (It’s around 1:45) You might want to recommend a new video next time!!!

What does your pattern say to do for the first rows?? According to your picture, you are doing the opposite of what is supposed to be happening! Which isn’t horrible, you will just have to pay a little bit closer attention to these rows.

Can u post here exactly what the pattern says to do for the Cast On and then for the first 2 rows??

Thanks

Thanks for picking that up Knitcindy. It’s ambiguous at best and misleading. Here’s a better one.

I like this one much better. She explains how to “read” your stitches.

Yeah. I realised today that I was knitting the knots and purling the purls instead of knitting the purls and purling the knots after I turned my work.
Thanks!

The pattern cast on was tubular and then it just said to do 2/2 rib for 7cm starting with K2.

I’m so glad u figured out what went wrong. When people talk about “knitting the knits and purling the purls” they’re talking about what sts are coming up next on the needle. You want to line up the “V’s” with knit sts and the “n’s” with purl sts. Just like in the video. So knitting the knits and purling the purls is what u want to do, if u want to end up with ribbing.
