10/14/10 - Thanks everyone for the help. I understand the pippi braid now and I want to combine it with a basic braid to make a scarf. I’m basically having the two connected with a column of stockinette. the problem is the pippi braid grows bigger than the standard braid causing the scarf to be uneven (as pictured above). i think its due to the pippi braid requires 4 rows (P6, turn, K6, turn, P6, turn, K6) before I can “twist” it. is there anyway to level the 2 braids? like make the basic braid repeat itself more?
Hi, I’m hoping someone can help explain these instructions clearer. My teacher explained it to me pretty quickly and I just dont remember everything she showed me.
She told me to ignore step 4 and 8 and just purl everything but I don’t know which order since I have stuff on my cn and stuff on my regular needles.
and before i even get to step 4, I’m confused with step 3 when it tells me to put my yarn in back… in back how? through the middle of my needles, in back of just my cable needle?
You mean Rows 4 and 8? If you look above at the 12 st LC and RC instructions, it says how to work rows 4 and 8 - R4 is p6 from the L needle then p6 from the cable needle, and R 8 is p6 from the cable needle, then p6 from the L needle.
This is the weirdest cable I’ve ever seen. I’ve never seen cables done with short rows in the middle of them and over more than one row in the middle of the cable. The chart seems to indicate doing the LC first and then the RC, the written directions the opposite. :pout:

If your teacher wants you to learn this she better spend the time it takes to show you. This is not a basic cable and needs more than a quick go over to explain. I can’t help you because I don’t get it either. I suggest you get back to the teacher and get her to really teach you this.
My other suggestion is to find another cable to use, that is more normal. :lol:
Those are short rows? I just figured the even rows were the WS of the cable on the RS. It’s hard for me to read it and I can’t understand the chart at all.
Are they short rows? How do you do cables using the stitches on two rows? It appears that the 6 over 6 cables are written on two row of the chart rather than one. Unless you move the first 6 stitches to a cable needle and then knit the rest of the row, turn knit back to the second side of the cable knit from the cable needle then from the working needle. Has anyone ever heard of this technique?
Yep I think so. If you read the cable instructions closely the RC you k12,[ [I]turn[/I], p6, [I]turn[/I] k6] twice, then put those 6 on the cn, take the first 6 sts off the R needle to the L needle and knit them. Very different. It makes the cable/braid raised and a little loose.
thanks everyone for the help/suggestions. i finally get it and it makes a pretty nice chunky braid. i dont get how to read the chart and neither does my teacher. she told me to ignore it. so just a note, this page is coming from the vogue knitting stitionary… its a really cute, but confusing book >_<
I don’t know. I wondered what happened to the stuff out to the sides of the Pippi braid with the short rows thrown in. Maybe you can’t combine it with another braid. You could use 2 or more of the Pippi cables together for a scarf. :shrug:
