You know you're a knitter when

Ok, so last Saturday one of my co-workers/friend/down the street neighbor called me in a panic. She was practically screaming into the phone (well, maybe not screaming, but it was definately more than a whisper and less than a Tarzan yell), anyhow, she tells me:

“I’m coming to your house I have a knitting EMERGENCY!!! I have to get this blanket done by 5pm (it was 10 a.m.) and I’ve messed it up somehow!!!”

At that moment I knew I was a knitter, a true blue, green, red, yellow, purple and what ever other color yarn I could get my hands on knitter. Because not only did I know it but someone else did, and thought that I was good enough to come to for help. (which :happydance: I was actually able to do, much to my supprise)

People have said “oh that’s pretty” or “oh, I wish I could do that”, but since I’ve just now after two years ventured into knitting in the round, and finally made something other than a scarf or a blanket (ohhh  , a purse…I’m branchin’ out <-- please note the self sarcasm) I never really thought of myself as a full fledged knitter. Ya know?

I’ll tell you what the feeling of wow, I’m passed the Superduper Extreame beginner level, and I am now just an Extreame Beginner. I’m moving up in the ranks!

So I was wondering, when did y’all realize where you stood in the ranks of knitters?

Yeah! It’s nice when someone else acknowledges you’re a knitter too, isn’t it?

I considered myself a ‘real’ knitter when I first contemplated knitting in the bathroom. I’m still debating if that would be too weird…

I don’t consider myself one yet. I’ve done dishcloths, caps, and scarves, but I’ll probably feel like a real knitter when I do a sweater or tank top or master cables. Maybe I’ll never get there, but I’m having a lot of fun in the meantime!

Fun is what it’s all about, right? :teehee: Although it’s hard to remember that when you’re frogging something for the fifth time. But I feel like a real knitter. I drool over beautiful yarns and I sometimes I buy them for no reason with the excuse that I may find the perfect pattern for them. I collect patterns that I may never make just because they’re beautiful or cool or unique. And I get emergency phone calls all the time from my 97 yo partially blind neighbor (who’s been knitting since she was 9) because she’s been frogging can’t get the needle back in the stitches

I think the first time I considered myself a knitter was when I had another knitter look at what I was doing and say “you should sell that!” I was pretty sold then.

When did the Velveteen Knitter realize she was real? (hehehe)

It came the day I came across a knitting pattern, could read and understand the pattern, and was able to execute the pattern. (yes, it was kind of like the pattern/picture. ahem.)

Ok… so it was a simple beret for my niece. But MAN I felt good. I understood the decrease/increase instructions, slipping knitted stitches, etc… I GOT IT! WOOOHOOO!!!

I shall fear no pattern. (Ok… I lie… I still fear patterns.)

Someday I’ll actually make a sweater with arms that are the same length and a neck that is NOT lopsided.

----The Velveteen Knitter
(someday I’ll be really a real knitter!)

I realised I was a real knitter when a friend of mine asked me if I could make her a sweater (but she still has to come over to look for a pattern) and when my mom (who taught me) asked me for help in stead of me asking her.

 :roflhard: I’ve wondered this same thing  and even wondered if there was a way to knit while taking a bath so I could really relax… :shifty:

 waiting to become a real knitter

How did I know I was a knitter?
When I thinking of ways to be able to knit in the hot tub! :roflhard:

hahaha I’ve tried that :stuck_out_tongue: :roflhard:

:cheering: :cheering: :cheering:
Yay for you!!! This is GREAT!!! What an exciting revelation!!! I still haven’t gotten to that point yet. Maybe when I knit my first garment I’ll feel like a “real” knitter? In the meantime, like others have said, I’m having fun, and I’m learning lots of new things to help me prepare for when I’m ready to make the “big step” into garments. My family seems pretty indifferent about my knitting, and I don’t know if it’s because I’m not an expert knitter, or because they’re generally indifferent about my knitting.

Anyway, I wanted to be a writer when I was in high school (can you tell by my long posts! ), and I was discouraged because I thought that “writer” meant a famous person who was published. My wise and encouraging teacher told me that “writer” simply means “one who writes”, meaning that as long as you are writing–whether or not you’re published and/or famous–you are a writer. Maybe the same can apply to knitting–a knitter is just “one who knits”, no matter what it is? Maybe we’re too hard on ourselves thinking that we have to complete that one masterpiece of a project in order to consider us to be “real” knitters? There’s something to be said for the more beginner’s projects of scarves and rectangular shawls…without them, the world would be a little colder, dontcha think?

i think you are right! i enjoy the process of knitting.drool over beautiful yarns ,buy them for no reason, collect patterns and make it to a beautiful clothes or scarf. :muah:

Although its true that to be a knitter one Should Knit
(the following is said with a Pompus Tone of voice)
my understanding is that to feel like a knitter is to feel like an Acomplished knitter and therefor (insert giggles and normal voice again)everyones input is WAY COOL view into your Psychies

MY most recent moment of purely SINFUL pride was when I got a Check for over $100 for my Little Knitted Goddesses

OMG I was (and still am) TOTALLY jazzed :happydance:
I went to my LYS and told the lady that was behind the counter and she said “I know already” I appologised for telling her more than once then noticed a laugh in her eyes
Turns out she is the BOOKKEEPPING person for the Store I sold them to
She knew before I did :roflhard:

so I spent some of the money I made on a new knitting bag from a Canvas bag crafter in my Town, and some more on YUMMY Alpaca yarn from the store I sold them too (I am gonna make a coupld single color Goddesses out of this for the lady who runs the store out of it)

I have had the moments where I felt like a true knitter
The first time I knit a ball was the first time
then the first time I repeted something I had done, made the same thing look good TWICE (WOW big deal there)
Then the first time I made an article of clothing that was not basically a rectangle or a hat (although I was proud of those too, but the sweater was a BIG deal for me)
Princess Abbie was a HUGE acomplishment, but she was not me BEING a knitter, she was part of how I became a knitter
I made my own design, and am selling them
and I am knitting Gifts for people, Shrug sweaters and writstlets
and I am finding and creating and tweeking patterns

I am a knitter
and I love it, and all of you for helping me to love it

Maybe I should Stop Rambling ON and ON

For me it was when I started looking at anything that’s knitted (like sweater in stores ans such) and try to figure out how it was made.

For me it was when I finished my first sock!!

I finished my first sock yesterday!

That’s cool! :cheering: You were able to help her and she knew you would be.

I taught someone to knit this past week, and I even taught them English throwing although I didn’t know how to do it myself until that very moment! Two handed stranding fair-isle, here I come!

What on earth is English throwing? I would have thought I would have heard of that if it’s an English technique. Never have.
I have learned how to knit lace, cables. Knitted sweaters, hats, bags, etc. but still don’t consider myself a proper knitter.
I might celebrate my knitting anniversary next month by buying more yarn than I can afford. Maybe a years supply.

I figured out I was a knitter when I went on a three day trip and didn’t bring my knitting stuff. I was misrable <_>

Maybe I’m not a full fleged knitter yet. I consiter myself at the Intermediate level. I can do lace (never have before, but I’m totally able to) cables, fair isle, knitting in the round, shaping, stripes, and I know how to do intarsia, I just haven’t gotten around to it yet. I consiter this a midway point :happydance:
