Hi everyone…silly me, thinkin I could do socks:thumbsup: finished the K2,P2 leg (no less than 5"long), did the foot (another 7" K2,P2 and stock st for the underside of the foot) then “tried” to do Kitchener Stitch for the toe…what a “joke”…the “toe” looks like it has “chicken pox” and the “sock” would fit the Incredible Hulk…didn’t even try the “heel” part yet…that’s when I get to “undo” live sts from the waste yarn after the leg part:biting: Yikes…I NEED AN EASY FIRST SOCK (MEN’S) PATTERN…:hair:why are there so many steps in “sock” making???
What pattern were you doing? Yes, the Kitchener stitch is a pain in the butt and I still mess it up if I am not paying attention. I need to have the tv off and be alone in a quiet room for 20 minutes with the instructions beside me- I’m NOT kidding.
What yarn are you using? For first socks I recommend a DK or worsted weight yarn as I found it very hard to knit socks with fingering weight at first. If fingering weight is all you have, that’s okay too though.
Silver’s Sock class found here is a great way to learn. There are directions for different weights of yarn and it’s all illustrated!
The pat is from One Skein Wonders…it’s probably a intermed pat…yarn I am using is a Worsted…using size US4 dpn’s…I have looked at Silver’s Tut, but I can’t sit at my comput and knit…so I have to go back and forth (which is a pain)Maybe the ratio needles/yarn is the problem. The yarn should probably worked up with at least a size 7 or 8. I am using a US4…and the Kitchener (if he or she was next to me while attempting that, I knock em in the melon with my needles!!!) don’t think I’ll ever get that one…Thanks for your help…![]()
Ditto to the worsted yarn and to Silver’s Sock class. You’ll get it!!
I’m sorry you are so frustrated. I’ve had the same experience but now can make a basic sock, although I still to have to take out often enough. Make sure you are starting with a real basic sock pattern. Don’t be so sure the sock you made was too big. I’ve thought that often enough and found the sock actually fit ok. Also, one of my favorite pair of warm sleeping socks is the first pair I knit, and that was too big! But that’s what makes them nice and comfy for bedtime.
I used to hate the Kitchener stitch, but then I saw somewhere on the Internet something that helped me. Most instructions have two initial slipped stitches, but after that you just have to remember KPPK in that order. So it’s KP on the front needle, then PK on the back needle (each time slipping off the first stitch after slipping). Always keep the work under the needle points, off to the right. As another poster said, be in a quiet room take the phone off the hook, lock the cat out, turn off the tv, etc.
Don’t give up, you’re getting it.
Aww thats the worst I had to frogg my first sock too so I know your pain. My puppy ate my DPN’s. Dont give up on the sock they are so fun.
