Yarn weights and conversions

I have a sweater pattern that recommends holding a fingering weight with a lace weight silk/mohair. Could I substitute a sport weight for this? The Guage is 20 stitches and 30 rounds = 10cm/4inches after blocking.

Welcome to the forum!
What is the name of your pattern?
Sport weight might be a bit light for 20sts to 4" but it depends on the yarn you want to use. Sport weight covers range of gauges so knitting a swatch is the best way to tell whether you’ll like the knit fabric and get gauge.

Even a laceweight yarn can fill in quite a bit of space if it is fluffy. You might find that a non-fluffy yarn on its own, even if a heavier weight, looks a bit thin.

Did anyone on Ravelry knit the pattern you are thinking of without the silk/mohair?

If you don’t mind letting us know the name of the pattern and the publisher or designer, we can help you search Ravelry projects to see (if you need help – you might be a search expert already!).
