i LOVE chunky weight yarns ALOT!! Jiffy thick (5 is bulky on the scale and 6 is superbulky ) in case you didn’t alreadyknow. JIffy runs about $1.50/skiein/ 3.5 oz
Jiffy thicknquick runs about $5-6 skein/ but knits up twice as fast as plain jiffy but IMHO thicknquick has a bulkier appearance and if your FIL is a heavy man the plain jiffy would probably be better.
also… I have used red light and lofty alot ~ $3skein/ for 5-6 oz which is plenty for a vest
~~all are acrylic so there are machine washable/dryer safe and plain jiffy has a mohair like texture to the yarn…
You could also used red supersaver yarn (worsted wt #4) and do a sidepull-center pull doubled up yarn to make a thickness of about 5 if many is really tight… however, in my own experience I didin’t like it as well as just plain ol jiffy
my first
Hope this helps!!
check out http://www.yarndex.com You can search yarns by weight and fiber content.
Lion Brand WoolEase Thick & Quick is a very inexpensive wool blend. Patons Bohemian is also bulky and very soft, but a bit more expensive, and it’s synthetic, I think.
I absolutely adore the Patons Bohemian. The only problem is that it tends to shed. I wouldn’t recommend it for a vest.
