Yarn substitution

I have been wanting to knit Annie Modesitt’s Corset tank top (http://www.anniemodesitt.com/patterns/#Corset) for just about forever. The problem is that there is no way I can afford the artyarns regal silk it calls for, or any other silk for that matter. MAYBE if I wait for my $200 bonus in March that i’m getting from work I might be able to afford it… but I’m thinking I’m better off with something less expensive.

I tried a cashmere/silk blend when I had money to splurge last year, but that stretched too much. Any suggestions for a yarn that has ease similar to silk but is less obscenely expensive??

Maybe a mercandized cotton? It has a bit of sheen and isn’t stretchy.

I think a while back someone was talking about making one of these out of Knitpicks Shine. I don’t remember hearing anything about the result but I would love to know this too! Also, is the pattern on the DIY website from when this top was on Knitty Gritty the same pattern that is for sale on Annie Modesitt’s web site?

You might have to play with needle size a tad and I didn’t see any varigated colors but Little Knits has Debbie Bliss Pure Silk on sale for $9.75 a skein – it’s 135 yards and has a gauge of 5.5/6 on a 6 needle.

Yummy colors!

Hope this helps!

It’s the one on the website- more complex than the one that was on KG. I was thinking cotton, I just have yet to use cotton much and wanted an opinion  What about cascade sierra? There are some gorgeous colors and I love the feel of it… think it might work?

bump any thoughts on cascade sierra?

No idea about the cascade. By the way, DiscountYarnSale.com has the artyarns regal silk for 82.50/bag, bag contains 5 skeins at 163 yards per skein. How many yards needed for the pattern?
