Yarn over not producing holes-Why? What am I doing wrong?

I’m a new knitter but I think I understand YO,K2tog,. But I must not or else I am doing something to close them up. Usually the next row is a purl row. Sometimes a hole will appear and then the next one doesn’t happen. I’ve done a yard of samples and can’t be consistent.
I’m doing knit 2,knit 2 tog, YO,knit, YO,Knit 2.
Anyone have any ideas? Thanks in advance.

Make sure you’re doing the yo correctly, bringing the yarn to the front between the needles and up over the needle to the back. Look at the video under the Free Videos tab at the top of the page, Increases, yo. It’s also possible that you are purling through the back of the yarn over loop when you get to the yarn over st on the purl row. That can close up the hole.

You may have found my problem. I know I am purling the stitch.
Am I supposed to “slip” it or what. Nothing in all the directions I have read shave said anything about this.
The row is good with holes until I purl… then they are gone.

Yes, you’re supposed to treat the yo just like any other purl st but it should leave a hole after you purl it. Put your right needle into the yo from right to left, just like a purl st. You should be working into the front leg of the st if that helps. It may also help to take a quick look at the purl video under the Free Videos tab just to make sure.

ok I’ll look at that.
