Yarn in front/behind?

This is a really stupid question, but I am just learning to knit from a book, and I am supposed to be doing an alternating row of knit then slip purlwise. To slip purlwise it says that the yarn must be in front of the project. After I knit, the yarn is always behind it. How do I get it to be in the front? Or am I just doing the knit wrong?

Thanks in advance for your help!

When you do a knit the yarn is in back, then when you turn it’s in the front of the row you’re facing now, or at least off to the side. To slip the first st, make sure the yarn to the front you need it there to purl anyway.
