Hi guys, me again. I have another question. Has anyone worked with the Patons Brilliant yarn?? Could you please do me a huge favor a crochet 7dc for 2 rows and tell me what the gauge is?? I want to make a skirt from this pattern book I just purchased and it requires Patons Brilliant yarn. It seems this yarn has been discontinued and I don’t want to buy the lot of it just to discover that it isn’t going to work out. The gauge should be 2 inches. I’ve tried light yarn, sock yarn, bulky yarn, and different hooks and I CANNOT get that gauge. It is never 2in tall and I don’t see how that could happen. Please, please, please help me out. OR! Do you know of a yarn similar to the Patons Brilliant yarn? No stores in my area sell this yarn. Thanks so much!
Every one works with a different tension and you might not get exactly the same as another person. How is your stitch gauge? That’s usually more important than row gauge because you can work to a measurement rather than the exact rows.
You should also use a few more sts than in the gauge swatch as the edge sts don’t behave the same and may curl. So if you worked 10 sts then measured out 2" in the center and count your sts that’s better. It’s also more accurate if you actually do a bit more like 3 or 4 or 5" as sometimes you get a partial st with only 2", but it may average out closer over a wider piece.
Another thing you can do is to try going up or down a crochet hook size and see if you can get that correct gauge. I just worked a pattern last week (knitting) for tube socks for a baby. One was a preemie size and one a newborn one. It was the exact number of cast on stitches and the pattern was the same, but one is knitted with a size 3 needle and one with a size 5 to make it larger. Try switching hook sizes.
