Yarn for fans of nice stitch definition

Hey there,

I am trying to learn about yarns so I can make informed decisions and find yarns that I like, but I’m feeling the information overload. I have The Knitter’s Book of Yarn, and it’s fabulously informative, but there’s just SO MUCH to know, and I’m having a hard time putting it all together.

So I am hoping for some advice based on some criteria about what I know I DO like in yarn, but that I’m not sure how to obtain.

The two most important things to me is that a yarn shows off stitches nicely, and itch minimization. I’m not feeling drawn to fuzzy yarns, and the patterns i"m liking are clean, with interesting bumps and ridges and whatnot. Also, I’m pretty touchy about itch…

Do you have any guidance about what fibers I should be looking for (or avoiding)? Do you have any favorite brands/styles that you recommend?

I probably just need to get using a bunch so I can actually feel the difference, but I get so overwhelmed in the yarn stores and online.

Welcome to KH!

First…if you’re using a smooth yarn almost any fiber will have nice stitch definition. Avoid novelty yarns or anything fuzzy.

Although I don’t have an allergy I’m extremely sensitive to itch as well. I can knit with anything it seems, but to actually wear it is another story. Sooooo…I can’t wear most wools, alpaca, mohair, etc. I’m working on a shawl now that’s 50% silk/50% merino so I’m hoping.

I often buy a single skein if I’m not sure and make a scarf or cowl type thing so I can see how it feels around my neck. If it’s itchy I give it away. Sadly I’ve given away a lot. :frowning:

People will make suggestions, but no one knows your sensitivity level so ultimately the decision will depend on that. I suggest trying different yarns (like I do) to see what you can handle.
