Yarn amount not clear on Pattern

I am going to knit a pattern for a vest and am trying to buy the correct amount of yarn, but the pattern only says:

Materials: NaturallyCaron.com Spa 6 (8, 9, 10, 12, 13) oz/170 (306, 255, 283, 340, 368)g

Am I missing something? Is gram the amount of weight I need to purchase? I am wanting to use a yarn that is 50gr/118yds.

How many skeins or balls should I get? Is there a calculator somewhere on this site or elsewhere that would calculate this for me?

Thanks,
Confused and snowed in in CLE!

There are 251 yards in a 3 0unce ball of Spa, so multiply the number of balls that you need for your size by 251 and match up the yardage for your yarn.

The actual weight of the yarn varies so much from yarn to yarn that you should work with yardage to make sure you have enough.

Thanks so much for your help… but I am still a little confused:
So I would need 9 balls of the Caron Spa, according to the pattern size. I took 9 and multiplied it by 251=2259 . Then I saw that the yarn I want to use has 118 yards, so I divided that into the 2259…. which means I need 20 balls of the yarn I want to use?

I got 2,295 yds in the recommended yarn but still came up with 20 balls. So I say, yes, that’s what you want to buy. I’d add in an extra or two just in case. Running out of yarn before you’re finished is no fun and you can always use the extra for something else.

You’re snowed in, huh? A good day for knitting.

Thanks Grumpy Gramma!! I am still learning, but loving this knitting thing!!
Yes, but I’m snowed in at WORK… UGH!!

Oh my, snowed in at work in Cle, I hope you have a knitting project with you! If not, this is certainly a good time to plan out projects. Keep in touch.
