Yardage

I am trying to figure out why 2 different yarns but same composition ( 75% wool and 25% nylon), both fingering, the 50 gram balls have different yardage. So it called for 100grams but due to the differences in yardage, I bought three 50 gram balls to make sure I had enough. But I’m trying to rationalize for future reference

Fingering weight like the other weight classes covers a range of gauges and weights. That might be accounting for a bit of difference. The safest thing to do is look to the yardage required for a project rather than the weight of the yarn. Never a bad idea to buy an extra just to be sure.
Which yarns are you comparing?

Pattern used pineapple yarn lani sock. I am using Patton kroy sock. I am thinking it might have to do with the ply. But I am just trying to be more knowledgeable so I can make smarter choices when choosing a yarn different than what pattern used. I tried yarn sub but couldn’t locate that yarn.

The 2 yarns do knit at overlapping gauges depending on which Patons Kroy you’re using.
although there’s quite a difference in yardage. It may be because the Patons knits over a range of 28-32 sts/4" while the Pineapple yarn knits at 32sts/4", possibly a thinner yarn. I’m just guessing here.
