# ? X ? increases

I need some help. I’ve been knitting for a couple of years, but this is the first time I’ve run across pattern directions like this. Can someone translate these increases for me? (I start with 23sts and begin the increases on the first row)

Increase 3 x 3 (4) sts, 5 x 3 sts, 1 x 2 sts and 9 x 1 sts on every RS row.
Then, increase 3 x 1 st on every other RS row = 57 (63) sts.

Thanks in advance to whomever lends their expertise!!

3 x 3(4) sts means that for the 3 next RS rows, you will increase by 3(4) sts. No increases on WS rows. Then on the next 5 RS rows you will increase 3 sts (If you’re doing the 3 increases on the previous rows, you can combine them). After that, on the next 9 RS rows, you will increase by 1 st. When those are done, you increase in EVERY OTHER RS row 1 st 3 times.

Oh, I thought the 5X3sts meant something about how many rows there would be between increase rows.

No, because right in the instruction line you wrote it says “…on every RS row”. Then in the last bit it says “…on every other RS row”.

Increase 3 x 3 (4) sts, 5 x 3 sts, 1 x 2 sts and 9 x 1 sts on every RS row.

Inc 3 or 4 sts, 3 times, then 3 sts, 5times, 2 sts once and 1 st 9 time, every RS row. Depends on which size you’re doing on the 3(4) st instruction.

Then, increase 3 x 1 st on every other RS row = 57 (63) sts.

Inc 1 st every other RSrow, 3 times, you end up with 57 or 63 sts depending on your size.
