WS or RS?

Depending on what you are knitting it can be difficult! What I do is use a stitch marker with an opening or a safety pin and pin it to the RS of my knitting so I always know where it is.

Generally, if you are knitting in stockinette stitch, the smooth side is the right side and the bumpy side is the wrong side. Same with a pattern, when the pattern stitch looks good that is the right side and the not so good looking side is the wrong side.

Is there a particular piece you are having problems with?

Actually Sara Jayne I finally frogged the project after 5 or 6 times. I was doing the lace pattern on a tank top after knitting the body with ST st. The lace pattern was to start on the WS which I was unable to determine was facing me at the time.

No fun! I hope you are able to figure it out!

Since you started with stockinette, the WS would be the row you would have done purl stitches on. You could just have ripped out to the stockinette and started your lace pattern over.

can you help me with a pattern? I’m doing a top from the book Classic Knits for Real Women. Pg.74 Lace Heart Top. Row 1-4 yo knit some and pearl some. Then row 5 says to follow a chart for the hearts. The chart says to knit if on the RS or purl if on the WS. Which side am I on? Does it matter how I cast on? I cast on by creating a knit row. I also knit english style. I hope you can help me. Thank you. Barb

Does it tell you at the beginning of any of the rows 1-4 which side is RS or which side is WS? You say for 1-4, you knit some and purl some. Are rows 1-4 also lace rows? Or do you mean you knit one row, purl one row? If the latter, usually, the rows you are knitting on are the right side rows. Mark that side with a pin or clip, and that side will always be the RS.

Thank you for helping me! The first rows say … Yes it does say Rs is first row, I guess I’m an idiot! However is that the same when you knit on your cast on stitches? I am also having a problem with the heart motif chart. How do you skip a stitch, just drop it? Thank you Barb

Hi. I do not think your CO method matters. If it says Row 1 is RS, then it is always RS, and all the odd number rows from then on will be RS, too. I’m not sure what you mean by skipping a stitch. Sometimes on lace charts there will be missing blocks and this is just because you’ve done decreases or such. You will usually get those stitches back by doing yarn overs.

It says K6, Yo, skp, k5. Then next row prl. Next row K4, k2tog, K, yo, skp, K4 it continues like that to make a heart motif. Thank you for your help. Barb

Barb. Skp might not mean skip. It might be telling you to slip a stitch, knit a stitch and pass the slipped stitch over the knit stitch. The pattern probably has a definition of what it means. Hope this helps.

Jeremy’s right, that’s probably what it means. At least that’s what it says in all of the stitch dictionaries I have.

Thank you, your right I looked it up. Thanks for your help. Barb
