Wrong side of a garter sitich?

Hello All,

I am new to this forum and as well to knitting. I have finished a few small projects and now starting on one for a furry friend of mine. I am doing the cat bed that is in the Stitch N’ Bitch book. I have a friend that is helping me, however we are both confused on few things. One is the directions they give " Beg with a RS row, inc 1 st each side of next row and foll 6 RS rows - 48 sts. Work even until piece measures 10 1/2" from beg, with a WS row. " My friend is confused as to RS (right side) row?? Where is it?? Plus is there really a wrong side to a garter stitich??? :??

This section is being knitting in garter stitch. Any help would be great!

Thanks!

J

Perhaps by “RS” they meant the side you started on? That would be my guess. But then, how the heck are you supposed to keep track of which side you started on in garter stitch?!

You’re right–garter is the same on both sides. I think it’s just a way to help keep track. The odd numbered rows are the right side, usually. I don’t see that it makes much difference in this project, though.

The best way to keep track of the right side for me is, when I’m finshed a row, I look to see wear my cast on tail is. If it’s at the end of the row, then I know the right side is facing me. I hope this helps

Sorry–but about the right side facing --which end if the tail hanging --at the point of the needle or at the back?? Sorry–I just didn’t get it!!

The location of the tail depends on what kind of cast on you used.

If you used a long tail cast on, then the tail is at the same end as your left needle’s point when you start your first row.

If you used a one-strand cast on then your tail will be at the opposite end of your point as your work faces you.
