Hi,
I’m a bit new to knitting so I had a little trouble following the instructions to this pattern: http://www.lionbrand.com/patterns/kmm-wristlets.html
I’m not entirely sure what it’s asking me to do at the “Gauge” part. Could someone clear that up for me?
Thanks,
-GG
Knit a swatch with the same needles and yarn you’re going to do the project in to make sure you’re knitting at the same size as the pattern was done in. The number of sts by the number of rows should be 4" square using the needles and stitch type they give you.
Gauge is the number of stitches per inch in a particular pattern.
If you have too many stitches per inch, then your piece will be smaller than the pattern says it will be. Too few stitches, and it will be larger.
Before you knit a pattern that has to be the proper size, it is advised that you knit a gauge swatch. Cast on enough stitches to make a square a bit more than 4 inches x 4 inches. Then measure how many stitches you get per inch or per 4 inches. You can also measure your rows, but the most important part is the stitch count, since you can always knit something to length by adding or deleting a few rows.

This is a good article on gauge.
Thanks; I understand now.
