Wrist Warmers Knit with Sock Yarn

When I was at the Southeastern Animal & Fiber Fair last year, I got some really cool, glittery sock yarn for just 2 dollars a skein. It’s Fortissima Colori “Disco” Socka Color.

As time went by, I was considering making socks. I found a very old pattern in an old Workbasket magazine, put the yarn on double points, and started making the ribbing.

Then, when I noticed how nice the glittery effect was, I didn’t want to hide the yarn on my feet under my pants. I decided to make gloves instead. THEN, when I got to the point where I would add the fingers, I decided to cast off and make them wrist warmers instead.

So now, here is one of my roll brim wrist warmers ready to wear. I’ve already started making the second one, so I’ll be able to take them out on the town soon. :happydance:

Cute!

Those are so cool!! I have some sock yarn that would be good for that, too! You’ve inspired me!

Very nice! Sorry if this is a dumb question, but Is that design all from the same ball of yarn? It looks quite intricate!

Very pretty! I can see why you didn’t want to hide that yarn in a pair of shoes!

Those look great! What a good idea. Now I need to have some of that glittery yarn. I googled it and it is being discontinued. So of course now I really need to have it!

What is the name of the color? What size needles did you use?

Anyone know where I can get the best price on it. (Usually about $9 skein)

Candice

Those are awesome!! I love the color!

Yes, the yarn is discontinued. Sorry. I guess that’s why I got such a good deal on it at the fiber fair. The glittery part is a very thin silvery thread, almost like tinsel on a christmas tree.

I guess if you’re desperate, you could get a fine silver thread and knit it together with some regular sock yarn for the same effect! Or, if you have a spinning wheel like me, you could ply the sock yarn together with the silver thread.

Mrosen asked if it’s all from the same skein of yarn - Yes! It’s self-striping yarn, made just for socks. You’ll find several different brands of sock yarn that works the same way. Lion Brand Magic Stripes, Moda Dea Sassy Stripes, Regia, Fortissima Socka, Plymouth Sockotta, Lorna’s Laces, Kroy Socks, the list goes on and on.

I used size 2 needles for making the wrist warmers.

I looked through my stash, and found two more skeins of this yarn, which are in a different color, with blue, brown, and grey.

I decided to put them up for auction on ebay, since I won’t be making another pair of wrist-warmers.

The opening bid is the price I paid for them - 2 dollars a skein.

Take care,

Here is the pattern I used to make the wrist-warmers, with the alterations I made. (It was originally a pattern for making gloves in a 1960 Workbasket magazine.)

Sandy’s Wrist-Warmers made with Sock Yarn

Materials: Approximately 2 skeins of Sock Yarn. I used Fortissima Colori Socka Color yarn, 50 gram balls. Size 2 double-point needles. Size 2 straight needle for casting on.

Gauge: 30 stitches and 42 rows to 4 inches using a Stockinette Stitch on US Size 3 needles. (from the yarn wrapper)

With size 2 straight needle, cast on 64 stitches. Divide stitches on 3 double point needles (20 sts on 2 needles, 24 sts on a third needle), join. Place a marker at the beginning of round. Work in ribbing of k2, p2 for 3 inches. Work in stockinette stitch (knit every round). Work 8 rounds even.

Next Round (Thumb Gusset) - Work to within 3 sts of marker at end of round, place another marker, inc in next st, k1, inc in last st. Knit 2 rounds.

Next Round - Work to marker, inc in next st, knit to last st, inc in last st. Knit 2 rounds.

Repeat last 3 rounds, working in same manner having 2 sts more between increases in thumb gusset until there are 21 sts in gusset (between markers).

Next Round - Work to marker, and place the remaining (gusset) stitches on a small holder or safety pin or thread. Cast on 5 sts at the end of working needle, and join to beginning of round, skipping the thumb gusset.

Knit every row for 1 inch. Bind off. Edge will roll. If you prefer, you can do ribbing instead for an even bind off edge.

Place the 21 sts from holder on 2 needles. Pick up and knit 5 or 6 sts from body of finished mitt. Knit 1 round.

Next round - Knit even, knitting 2 sts together at the section where you picked up stitches earlier. This will help the thumb gusset lay nicely.

Knit every row for 1/2 inch. Bind off. This edge will probably not roll since it’s so small and fits nicely around the thumb.

You’re done!

Very cute!!

Very cute! I love sock yarn. There’s just something about that weight yarn that I just find so appealing! Nice work!

The color I used for the wrist warmers is #9049 - Vera Cruz, and I used size 2 double point knitting needles.

What a great idea! I’m glad you decided not to hide the yarn on your feet

That is a great idea! I happen to have that brand of yarn, different colors though. No silver. You’ll get a lot of wear out of those… I have a pair of fingerless gloves I always wear instead of my good ‘leather’ gloves. So much more comfortable. Thanks for the pattern!

What CUTE yarn!! Your right! It should be SEEN!
