I’m working on a sweater (newbie knitter) and want to understand what it means when it says “wrap next stitch”. How is that done. Working on a shoulder and will need to turn the work to continue after wrapping. Is this necessary? Thanks.
Hi & welcome to KH. Can you link to your pattern? You seem to be starting short row shaping. Is the wrap necessary? Per your pattern, doing the wrap and turn, yes it is necessary. If you used a different method, no it wouldn’t be.
How to Wrap and Turn
Hello, pjmKNIT. The video GrumpGramma linked to is a good one for showing how to do a Wrap and Turn, or W&T for short. If you want to view an alternative Amy Finlay, the lady who founded this site, has a video call Short Rows under the Free Videos - Advanced Techniques tabs at the top of the page.
Regarding your question ‘Is this necessary?’. The turn part of the W&T will give you the short row shaping and is necessary. The wrap part stops you getting a small hole in you knitting later on. If you don’t do the wrap you sweater wont fall apart or anything terrible like that, so it’s not 100% necessary. However, I will still encourage you to do the wrap as it’s one of these techniques that adds a +1, in terms of effort, to doing just a turn, but adds (I think) at least a +5 to how good the finished sweater will look.
The video link from GrumpyGramma was excellent. I am working on a short row shoulder shaping on the “Austin Hoodie” by Connie Chang Chinchio.

That’s cute.
Julie, I looked for the W&T video here and couldn’t find it. Thanks for mentioning it.
