Would changing the stitch pattern alter the gauge?

I have a question on using one stitch rather then the one given in the pattern.

I have a knee length vest pattern which is all done in Garter stitch. I would rather do it in Stockinette. Would changing the stitch pattern alter the gauge?

Yes, it probably would. Stockinette stitches are taller than they are wide and garter stitches are relatively square.

I’m not saying you want to, but for instance if you wanted to do cables or ribbing you’d have to cast on more stitches because of the way they pull in…unless you like tight clothes. :lol:

Yes it will, garter is a little wider and shorter than stockinette. But you can compare your gauge with the pattern and adjust your needle size, and knit the length to measurement.

Experiment and see what happens when you knit it in stockinette. I don’t care for garter stitch and make things in stockinette instead and am satisfied with the outcome.

I really don’t care for Garter stitch either. I just might give it a try. If it doesn’t turn out then ,it’s only yarn right, I can always frog it .

I was just worried that the yarn usage would be way off.

It’s a very basic pattern. Knitting in garter up the back then left and right front panels and join at the shoulders. It connects from the armhole down to about the hip. Then there’s a slit from there to the bottom on both sides to the knees.

I can’t post a link to show you because someone copied it out of a magazine and and gave me a copy .

I’ve tried to find something similar to it online but haven’t seen a pattern close enough to this one yet.

The pattern sounds basic enough, you might use a little less yarn with stockinette - garter eats it up. Depending on your gauge, they might not be too much different. I did a practice piece a few days ago in both, and found the stockinette wasn’t that much off.
