Working with a chart

Any practical tips on working with charts? I am starting a multi-cable project and it looks really intimidating. Cables are no problem for me, its following the chart I’m worried about! And its not just one chart… use chart A for one thing, then chart B… how do you guys keep on track? I am going to do what the Daily Knitting folks say and highlight the pattern… any help is much appreciated!:notworthy:

What I’ve done with patterns that have different-length panels is to make a chart where I head the columns A B C B A and list the numbers of rows underneath.

A B C B A

1 1 1 1 1
2 2 2 2 2
3 3 3 3 3
4 4 1 4 4
1 5 2 5 1
2 6 3 6 2
3 1 2 1 3
4 2 3 2 4 like this if it makes any sense.

You can also keep post-its on the pattern at the appropriate rows on each chart.

Are all the charts worked in a row or are they used in different parts of the project? Years ago I made an afgan with 10 patterns across. I had my computer wiz daughter crank out a numbered sequence similar to what Ingrid suggested. I got to over 200 rows and the sequence never repeated. It was fun, but never again.

another thought. either print out each pattern by itself or copy on to graph paper good luck

These are good thoughts, thanks. I don’t really get what you suggest, Ingrid, can you elaborate?

I am thinking I will copy the charts from the pattern onto graph paper and fill in the missing bits - they have 2 charts, and then directions for what to do between the charts. So I’d like a master chart that shows everything. Then maybe blow that up so I can actually SEE it (these charts are tiny). I like the post-it idea, and I’m ordering a magnetic chart keeper from KP that actually has a long enough magnetic bar to go under the whole row, and you move it up each row.

Once I can see the pattern in the work it might not be necessary to follow the chart so closely, not sure how easy it will be to see.

I am in and out of fibro-fog phases so sometimes things are really hard for me to understand! Especially spatial things. But somehow I think its good for me to keep working that spatial ability so I don’t lose it completely!

Still open to any and all suggestions!!!
