Working intarsia into first project?

I wanted to put a REALLY simple design on the bum of my lastest pair of shorties that Im knitting for DD who is cloth diapered…

Maybe just a simple star? How do I do this? Find a chart for a star and just follow that adjusted to my pattern?

Any recommendations would be lovely.

The first thing to realize is that intarsia can’t really be worked in the round, so your best bet would be to find a pattern that works back and forth.

Find a chart to follow–www.knittingpatterncentral.com has links to charts, and to Intarsia sites, and then take a look at Amy’s video for switching colors–you have to twist them so you don’t leave a hole between colors, and you should be good to go.

OH! Well I guess that makes sense then on why I Couldnt figure out if it was going to be possible…

Is this what they call intarsia? This is kinda like what I Was wanting to do but something similar… I dont know of any shortie pattern in flat knitting… humm…

I’ve seen a pattern or two in a sock book I just bught that uses intarsia in the round, but maybe there are special conditions that have to be met and isn’t suited to just any design, Haven’t done intarsia yet so I can’t offer any more insight than that.

but in any case, what you could do is finish the shortie and then duplicate stitch in the star design after.

If unfamiliar with the technique, duplicate stitching just means you’re taking a similar yarn of different color, and you’re using a darning needle to weave that yarn over individual stitches. Plenty of tutorials on the net if you look up duplicate stitch or swiss darning.

You can then just find a star chart and place it anywhere you want!

The problem with intarsia in the round is that you’re motif yarn is at the wrong end of the design on the next round. If both colors are carried through the design–like a lacy snowflake or something, then there is a technique to do it. For a big block of color, though, you’d have to work it back and forth.

If you just want a basic design, this sweater that I just finished was knit in the round and has a nice two-color pattern you could follow.

It’s Fair Isle, not Intartia, but it’s knit in the round.

Ha ha Crankypants Monster Booty HA HA!! How funny! The red stripe on those is just a stripe from the looks of it but the white bits will be intarsia (although you could kind of embroider them on later to look like knitting). You can’t do those in stranded colourwork (which I think you’re imagining when you say Fair Isle).
For a star you will need intarsia or duplicate stitch (aka swiss darning). You should be able to find a chart online or make one yourself! Check out the intarsia videos on this website to show you how to twist the wool around to stick the two colours together.
If you make your own chart, you need to make it on knitter’s graph paper (free to print out online just Google it), which has rectangles rather than squares, because knit stitches are not perfectly square. If you use square graph paper you will get a star that is kind of squashed flat.
