Hi
I am new to knitting and would like to knit a blanket .
I have found a pattern but the wool is discontinued.
It’s coran United .
Is there an equivalent wool I can use instead please ?
Welcome to KnittingHelp!
You can probably substitute any aran or heavy worsted weight yarn in this pattern. An acrylic yarn or superwash wool would be a practical choice for a blanket.
Yarn Sub is a very good site for yarn substitutions, especially with local yarn stores limited by the quarantine. They take into account yarn weight as well as fiber and texture.
Thank you! I don’t know much about this ! If I choose any Aran wool and the needle size is different. Do I go with the size the pattern says it the size the wool I have chosen says ?! Sorry !
Good question. You need to knit a swatch with your chosen yarn. You can start with the needle size recommended in the pattern. Cast on enough sts to give at least a 5 inch wide swatch. So if the pattern gauge is 20sts/4 inches, cast on at least 25sts. When you’ve knit 3-4 inches, measure the swatch over the middle 4 inches to determine your gauge.
You may need to go up a needle size if there are more than 20sts/4 inches or go down a needle size if there are fewer than 20sts/ 4 inches. That’s the best way to determine which needle size will give you a blanket that’s close to the pattern size.
Since it’s a blanket, you can be a little off and it’ll be ok. A blanket doesn’t have to fit the way a sweater does.
Here’s a video on gauge.
I’ll give it a go ! I don’t have any needles so I’ll order both ! Trying to keep myself occupied at the moment !
Thank you so much for your help !
