WIP: Tuxedo vest (or sweater). Worth finishing?

This thing is also a result of the mandatory destashing by knitting :slight_smile: Originally I bought this super bulky yarn to crochet some toys but it is getting too ‘fuzzy’ from any kind of rubbing so it’s pretty much useless for anything that is going to be worn or played with often.

Since I had a bit of black and white yarn left, it somehow became a tuxedo :slight_smile: Other patterns made me dizzy because it’s really contrasting. Anyway, here is my problem – I don’t have enough yarn to finish :frowning: The vest’s back now is 50/50 black and white and it sort of kills the tuxedo joke :slight_smile:

So have to go and buy more black yarn (the whole bag!) that I was going to get rid of.

So, would you finish (a vest or a sweater)? Or redo it (ideas are welcome) or just forget it and have a life :)?

Okay, I don’t know what you intend for your kiddo to wear this to, but . . . if it’s for public wear, I’d probably rip it out and forget it rather than buy more yarn I didn’t like. After all, life’s too short and money’s too scarce (around here anyway) to spend it on yarn I know I don’t like!

You could always make this into a nifty looking little rug (but I’m thinking crochet for that so perhaps not).

HOWEVER, if you think your kiddo might wear this around just to play in or for fun, I’d make the front and back look EXACTLY the same, so he looks the same going as coming.

Thanks. That’s the point – where to wear it? It was meant as a joke for an occasional party or something but now I can only think of trick or treating on Halloween :slight_smile:

I was just curious to see how it would turn out… but staring at something for a long time makes one attached to it for no good reason :slight_smile:

You’ve done a great job with it, but if you don’t enjoy it I’d say frog it. I find if you don’t enjoy something you’ll keep putting it down and before you know it your child will outgrow it anyway. Either do something else with the yarn or donate it. :hug:

OK, decided then :slight_smile: There is really little to donate. So maybe some inspiration will strike for a smaller project.

p.s. You know how some people with gambling addiction can ban themselves from the casinos? I think I should do the same with the clearance yarns :slight_smile: (But it’s just so exiting to try something new every time and have enough of it to make whatever…) See, that’s addiction talking :slight_smile:

Never struggle too much with something until it is so frustrating you can’t stand to look at it. As long as the yarn isn’t super expensive, frogging and just letting it go isn’t such a bad thing, but personally, I think the front is adorable!

It would be great for kids for play. I bought a lot of stuff at thrift stores that I had big plans for but it wasn’t quite right. I also had half finished projects that I was going to get to someday. If it’s been sitting around for more than two years and you just can’t get excited about it, throw it out.

So you say the Back is almost done??? What’s black? What’s white?

Well anyway…think about doing solid red for the Back. I think that would be nice. You could also work red duplicate stitch over top the bowtie and/or the buttons which would bring red around to the front.

Just an idea…

Thanks for ideas. The back is frogged now, the front is still there :slight_smile: I was thinking about different colour for the back too but nothing in my stash matches the weight of this yarn.

I’d say stuff it and make a pillow of it rather than a garment.

A few years ago I wanted to knit a top for my daughter, using Rowan ’ Calmer’, but it was a bit too thin to get gauge, so I used another (same color) yarn along with it (sportweight) and VOILA, perfect gauge.

Could you do something similar? That darling little tuxedo get-up is worth saving! The design work is flawless from an artistic standpoint! You just need to solve the mechanics of the back piece. What’s most important (the front) is done, and darn well!

I think it is a cute and unique project and certainly worth finishing. ArtLady’s suggestion of a red back with some red also incorporated into the front would be a real zinger. Good work. Keep the Forum posted.

I think the colour combination would be great but it has some Count Dracula connotations for me :slight_smile:

I have another idea which I have to try first and let you know if it worked.

If your current idea doesn’t pan out, I, too, like the idea of a pillow (which I thought of last night and someone else has already suggested). You could fill out the rectangular form with more black knitting and just sew cloth around the parameter for the back. Then stuff it and put it on your kid’s bed!

So, just in case anyone reads it and wonders what happened – the tuxedo front grew a zebra back :slight_smile: Now it is in my daughter’s preschool well suited for a black tie safari dress up :slight_smile:

Aw, thanks! I didn’t take a picture mostly because I ran out of yarn and one zebra shoulder is kind of ugly :slight_smile: But if you can imagine, it has stripes up to the v-neck and the shoulders are black (with some patches of blue and grey).
