WIP - knitting journal

Hi all,

This is not about a “WIP” per say but rather a knitting journal where you keep track of your "WIP"s and "FO"s. (Hmm… how do you make those plural? That looks wrong!)

Now, I’m not talking about the kind of journal where you write down your personal stuff or anything like that - unless you want to! (Hey, someone might want to put in their interesting knitting dreams? No names given! :roflhard: ) I’m talking about a book where you keep track of what you knit. I’ve been doing it for about a year now and find that it helps TONS! Plus, whenever I feel like a slug who never gets anything done, I open it up and go, “dang, I’ve done a lot!” :happydance:

I went to one of the book stores (Border’s I think) and got one of those hardback blank journals. It was like 6 or 7 bucks - they always have them on sale! In the front, I wrote down the story of how I started knitting. On the blank pages, I put what I knit. What kind of stuff do I put? Well…

When I started/finished.
What yarn and how much.
Which needles and extras (cable needles, etc)
The pattern - can be a word like “scarf” or a full pattern noted down.
If it was a gift, who got it and what was the occasion.

Sometimes I put a scrap of the yarn in there if it’s something very interesting or different. I ALWAYS put any “Thank You” notes in there but… there’s aren’t as many as I’d like. :frowning: If I love or hate the pattern, I write that down too. There are some things that turn out great but I HATE doing them - good to remember! I try to put in pictures but those usually end up on a CD with all my other knitting pictures.

So… why should you do this? If you’re a new knitter, it’s a great resource. I find that I go back and look at what I’ve done before and try new things. OR I look back and think of way to make the same thing different - new stitches or yarn or whatever. If you give lots of knitted gifts… I can’t tell you how much this helps! I can look back and see that I made someone a scarf for Christmas last year and this year, I can make a matching cap! I also avoid giving knitted gifts that are a little too similar to ones I’ve done before. If you’ve been knitting forever, it’s something new to do! Why? Well… why not?

My DD claims that she wants this book, eventually. Hmm… that’s interesting. I might be making something that will be handed down. What if my beloved MIL had done something like this! What if I were the one to get it!!! Ooooo! Wouldn’t that be cool to see what she knitted over the years - she was the South African version of Ingrid until arthritis took away the joy of knitting. :crying:

Anyway… this is my WIP that is never ending. I find that I enjoy writing down what I’ve done and watching the book fill-up. It’s something that I thought other folks might enjoy doing as well. The possibilities are endless - do it on computer, use a spiral notebook, use index cards… whatever! I just wanted to throw out the idea because I’ve not seen it mentioned here before. Well, I mentioned it in my blog but… that’s different. If the idea appeals… take it and run with it! Make it your own!

Later! Angela

I have thought of doing this in a three ringed binder where I can use page protectors to include swatches, pictures, etc. Great Idea! I just can’t seem to get myself in gear to do it.

I wanted to keep track too but had a feeling I wouldn’t keep up with a book. So I started my knitting blog and back-dated posts to when I started knitting, detailing all of my FOs. I’m soooo glad I did it – it’s really great to have as a reference!

But I highly recommend you buy from YLS or independant bookseller rather than evil empire chain stores.

I’ve been doing that, in a way. I needed to write down how many repeats I had done in a pattern. Then curiosity got me to start writing begin/end dates. Then somewhere along the line I started adding yarn and needle selections and it just exploded. I had been using just what ever paper I could find at that particular moment then just keeping it all in my giant craft bag ( a really huge duffel bag with lots of pockets). That particular pocket is getting quite messy. For some reason a journal never occured to me. Thanks for the idea. I am off to check it out. I have to go grocery shopping later and I may just stop by a book store on the way home. :happydance:

:happydance: Yeah! I’m so glad that I mentioned this!

A blog is definitely a knitting journal! ANYTHING can be a knitting journal! It’s very interesting to hear how other people keep up with their knitting. I didn’t even know that they sold an actual “Knitting Journal” so that’s interesting as well. I’m going to check them out… just for ideas!

I actually started mine because last year was “The Year of the Scarf” and I had a hard time remembering who got what.

I keep knitting journals, too, with all of my notes…I’ve been doing it with regular spiral notebooks, but am thinking of using these after the 1st of the year when I update my knitting binders. I have found it very, very useful to keep notes, especially when creating patterns, otherwise…all is lost…and quickly…my brain has a memory leak :roflhard: :rofling:

Rebecca I can’t imagine your brain having a memory leak. Especially with all the stuff you can do.

Robin

Robin, u r so sweet…was that your name…LOL, just kidding…oh my, if I don’t write it down I forget my name :roflhard: :rofling:

I think a knitting journal is a great idea. I am considering which one to buy of all the nice ones I’ve seen here!!

I need to keep the labels from the yarn etc. that I am currently using so I will remember what I used etc.

GREAT idea! I bought a book to do this same thing with my sewing but I never used it! I’m a pretty new knitter so I think I’ll start now!

Great idea! I have to say I am usually against paper based systems, I love my computer and have thought about doing a blog! But being able to put in the labels and bits of yarn appeals to me

I am only on project three of my knitting life…so I am off to the shops this lunchtime to find a book and buy me some glue!!!

Thanks for the idea.

I actually just started a scrapbook to capture all my knitting projects. It combines both of my hobbies!! I bought just a small 8x8 inch book and use 1-2 pages per project – I include all the info that you guys do, and a couple of pictures and a swatch of the yarn. (Plus, it helps me use up all the scrap pieces of cardstock and random stickers and embellishments left over from my “real” scrapbooks.) It’s neat to pick it up every now and then and see what I’ve accomplished, plus then I have the fun of making up the pages!

I would really love to have a scrapbook like this. But I am afraid. My life, my house, my family can’t handle another craft…

Hiya,
My knitting journal has officially been started  It looks a bit like something I did at school, but I think it’s great! All I need is some photos of the stuff I have made so I can put them in the journal and up on here

Ingrid, I’ve seen that, but it doesn’t help. I need to see her knitting 2 socks on the ML. I think I could figure out a hat or something by her video.

FANTASTIC idea!!!
Why didn’t I think of that??? :wall: Awesome idea (with a capital “A”)!
I’m in love with journals anyway, as well as knitting, so for me it’s like, you squish both together and voila! You’ve got the perfect life.
