My current project after maybe 15-20 years of not knitting is a plain scarf.
The yarn used is zitron Blickfang in the color feuervogel. it’s a 99% merino 1% nylon yarn. Available in very nice colors. it has small knits in the yarn wich make for a very nice finish. more info: http://www.atelierzitron.de/GoLive_Daten_e/Seiten/blickfang.html
The scarf i’m making is 12" wide and i’ll see how long i’ll be bale to make it. I have 3 skeins of the yarn. Attached an image of the work in progress. i’m knitting with 7mm needles about 40 knits wide.
If anybody has some idea’s to finish the edges when the project is done i’mm all ears. i guess plain edges would be a bit dull…
You could finish with a picot bind-off. Ending on a RS row, this will necessitate you picking up stitches on the three remaining sides, with extra stitches for each corner, directions:
Begin with an even number of stitches (RS) Bind off 2 stitches, slip stitch back to LH needle, and using the cable cast on method, cast on 3 stitches, bind off 5 stitches repeat from to.
I love jinx’s idea of tassels, also. These could be worked on all sides of the scarf, if you like, placed at intervals of your choosing.
Thanks for the ideas and encouragements. Currently the scarf is a little over 40cm long. I hope to get it quite a bit longer this weekend. My knitting speeds is also increasing as I am getting used to knitting more again. I hope to have the scarf finished by the end of the month. (it’s supposed to be a farewell gift for a colleage at work who’s leaving. I hope she’ll like it)
I’ll probably stick with regular tassels keep it simple
I really like your scarf. Red is my favourite colour. (with all the "u"s in those last two words, can you guess I’m Canadian?)
I like plain scarves, no frills, no tassles (they get messed up in a jacket zipper). I also like scarves rather short, just enough to cross once over the chest, and not to hang below my jacket.
Yup, really enjoying myself here. Now what about this idea to finish the scarf… I’d like to add pompoms to the ends instead of regular tassels/frills. As the edges are 12" wide I was considering 5 small 1-1.5" diam. pompoms on each side. I guess the pompoms would be a nice match with the knots that are on the scarf itself. I have about 2 weeks left to have it finished… quite some work to do still… (next project will be without a deadline)
