WIP - First hat

So it looks more like a bread bowl right now  , but it IS my first ever hat and my first time using circular needles. Yeah for me!

It’s coming along much better now that I’m past that evil cast on and the first row. I used 1 size bigger to cast on - 11 instead of 10. I’m thinking it might be tight to get over my head even though I did a swatch.

It’s looking great Marni, as for the size, I can’t really say anything about that since I’ve had enough of my own hat mishaps (or should I say mishats? :roflhard: ). I’ve found that my swatches were a different size (cos I did them flat) compared to when I actually knit the yarn on the round.

You should be able to kind of try it on your head in another inch though. And I have a good feeling since you have a ribbed hat, so it will be nice and stretchy. Let us know how it goes.

Marni, It looks good, I love the color! Dont forget to post the pic when it is done… :XX:

You’re on your way! Hats often look small at first because they need to stretch to stay on your head. Hang in there.

you’d be surprised how much a hat can stretch!!

SUCH a pretty color! What yarn, please??

Ribbing always makes things look much smaller than they really are–you should be fine. And that color is just lovely!

how many stitches do you have on the needle? I am waiting on my Denise set to try the 20 inch circular on the size 8’s the pattern called for. I was using a 29 inch and the hat could have fit Paul Bunjan It was the, YES EVERYONE ALREADY KNOWS HERE, Corps of Discovery Lewis & Clark MISHAT. I bought some 24 size 7 addis…I thought MAYBE I could get buy with those…I am at such a loss with this hat.
Nice job!

I ALWAYS have issues with the cast on row being too tight.

I made my oldest daughter a hat and had that issue. I sprayed the edges with a little water and put it on my head until it dried. Worked like a charm.

This is that stash of recycled yarn from a sweater. I already made a multi colored scarf with it. No idea what the yarn is. I’m holding 2 strands together so my cast on was only 56. I really like the scarf, but I’m not too sure about the hat yet.

Well, here it is so far. I gotta say though that for the amount of knitting I’ve done for this I could have made two hats  . I think I was up to row 25 and decided it looked to loose so I frogged the whole thing. Then OH MY trying to figure out the “basic hat formula” inc/dec to match “E” and K2 this and that. Wow, I must have knitted and frogged the orange part at least 5 times! (no I’m not kidding). BUT, it’s been going OK since the start of the orange.

I can’t possibly make another decrease with those circs so I made these DPNs following Amy’s guide. Now how do I use them??? :?? Oh I fear more frogging!!!  :frog:

Um, you need 4. Three with the yarn on and one to knit with. You basically need an empty needle to knit off one needle. When that one becomes empty you use it to knit off of number two, etc, going around the needles in turn.

LOL. Thanks Ingrid!!! I was wondering how many I’d need  . I still have 3 more pieces that length and was thinking of doing 2 more at the length as the first 3 then 2 short ones. Obviously I’ll have to review Amy’s double-pointed needle video too  .

Ok, I’ve made 2 more DPNS and a couple short ones for cables or something. Slipped the stitches evenly on to them and whallah! I edited the above photo to show the dpns in the hat. Thanks for the heads up, Ingrid.

Oh and they work too! And I did one row with them without having to frog :happydance: (There’s hope for me yet)

 very nice and I love the colors!!! :happydance:

i cant wait to see the finished product! i love the WIP pics!

Oooh, that hat looks lovely!

And congrats on making your own dpns! If I’m ever in a crafty mood (beyond knitting, of course), I just might have to try that, if only to supplement the dpns that come in four-packs rather than five. (Makes me so mad! )

Looks great – nice color choices!

Where could I get the pattern for this hat? I really like the style! It’s so bulky…did you knit with 2 strands? Love it!
